MG MGA - Wing piping query

Brown & Gammon have two types of wing piping for sale. OE spec is double price of alternative, does anyone have comment on relative qualities? Mine is suffering from the sticky brown syndrome!

I bought my wing piping from B&G last week. I spoke to Malcolm Gammons and he said that he could only recommend the OE quality. It seemed worth spending whit is in reality only a little extra when doing such a job. I have not fitted the piping yet as it is laid out in one of the bedrooms to get rid of the curl from it being rolled up. It looks good, but I am no expert.

Mike, Bob West has the ONLY correct piping available.

What is the correct e-mail for Bob West?
I have tried this one: SRX210@aol.com no response..
Morten Bexrud Olsen

Morten, as far as I know that's still Bob's email, but try the SRX in Higher case i.e. SRX210@aol.com

In my experience Bob doesn't major on computer tech! You need to phone him or James. The number is on his website.

Hi Mike,
I have rebuilt two MGA'S using Bob Wests wing pipeing and it is the only one to use it is about half as thick across the rounded section compared with the re-pro stuff .It is well worth the money and saves a lot of hastle when fiting the wings

Hi David
Can you sketch out or illustrate exactly what you mean
by "about half as thick across the rounded section compared with the re-pro stuff"

Many thanks

Is it possible for you to post a photo of the Bob West supplied material?
My query with general comments above, have commentators used Moss or B&G piping, why are they inferior to BW material, chemical composition, colour, dimensional variations?
I have used Moss US piping on two cars about 5 years ago and while the depth of the web was shorter than original stuff it installed okay - has lasted without going brown and bead profile and colour seems okay except to concours purist. Also suppliers may have changed manufacturers over time so what was a problem 10 years ago may not be a problem today.
As piping always raises alot of comment I will ask Barney if he will consider a dedicated page with photos and dimensions of piping from various suppliers.

Mike,
My first car was finished 11 years ago and there is no sign of discolouring.Bob has the piping made 1000 metres at a time,as you say the web depth is deaper also the radius of top of the piping is larger than the repro product from Moss.if you put the two products together the difference is obvious

I bought the fender piping from Moss Motors USA that indicates it's made in U.K. I later found someone on MG Experience that had some Bob West Fender Piping and I bought it. The Moss piping is going back!

I've attached a picture of the Bob West piping to this message. As you can see, the web depth is nearly 1" which is the same as the original that I took off of my car. The Moss piping is under 3/4". I'll attach a picture of it to the next post.

Here's the picture of the Moss piping.

Does the decreased web depth make any difference when it is installed? I have used the Moss piping and it seems okay with minimum buckling( I noticed Barney used the Moss piping when ovehauling the MGA with Attitude). My main concern is whether the piping bead is roughly the same profile/colour and does the plastic degrade over time any faster than the Bob West supplied material

I have the Bob West piping on my car - since 1997. It still looks as good as new as far as I can tell. I will look in my box of bits later to see if I have an offcut that I can compare the colour.

Mike,
I haven't installed it yet and this is my first MGA so I cannot answer your question? One thing I noticed about the Bob West piping is that is not as shiny as the Moss piping.

There is a photos on Barneys site with the Moss and Bob West in profile side by side. There's a world of difference. Bob's is the stuff to go for, and I too can verify that it doesn't fade or turn brown....

I have installed piping from Scarborough Faire. I also decided against using the Moss product because of the web depth as stated by Jim Cheatham. The SF bead width is .030 wider than the Moss bead, but I don't know which is closer to the original. I found the slightly wider bead a benefit in the wing to body interface, and its not obvious. I don't have any long term use experience with the SF piping.
