MG MGA - wiper arms

I have had an ongoing problem with wiper arms that keep falling off , usually at times when you really do need them to stay on. I have replaced the arms twice over the last 12 months but with no real improvement.
At the moment they are jammed on using a bit of kleenex which looks a mess but it got me home through 100 miles of torrential rain when used intermittently and with the help of Rainex on the screen.

It seems that the socket end of the arms are just too loose a fit on the on the spindles splines.

Are there any tight fitting new wiper arms available from anyone these days or am I going to have to dig out some 40 year old ones and have them rechromed .

Colyn,

I bought mine from Sportscar Metalworks (Metal Mick). They seem to do the trick and were a reasonable price too.

Kind regards,

I see that Tex Automotive has a screw down wedge lock mounting option which clamps on the shaft. It should solve your problem. You can order them polished. To build the part number use the following link:

Colyn, I tweaked the little spring clip inside the the part that goes over the splines. It seems that the clip has to go down far enough to grab the underside of the splines, then it won't fall off. I also found that I had to file the top of one of my splines because it was too high to allow the arm to slide down the splies far enough. Like you, I had lots of trouble with my wiper arms falling off, and as you you say, when you really don't need it to happen. I have no trouble now, and yes, I do drive in the rain!

Maybe not be best solution, but is it worth building up the gap of the splines with some Epoxy - Liquid metal or something? This putty that goes hard...

Once set and cleaned nicely it can be quite neat?
Just an idea.

Colyn, I too have been finding this problem.(Incredibly lucky each time to find the blade and arm on the road behind me!)
Spoke to Bob West and he has sold me a pair of wiper arms "that they use on the Rally cars". These have a screw which tightens them down so they shouldnt come off and also the pressure on to the screen is better and stops the blades lifting.

Moss do arms with the screw, but do not over tighten as they can split!!

Thanks for the info all, I didnt know about the screw on type of arms David, I will have to visit Bob Wests again to try some out.
I seem to be there a lot, probably more than I really should be, but I have to admit there are always some really fascinating cars to see there.
