MG MGA - Wiper blades the new gold?

A pair of OEM Rainbow wiper blades have just sold on Ebay for US$204.50..$102.25 per blade!!
Gary Lock

My concern about using old (NOS) wiper blades would be the rubber is likely to have hardened. Is there a noticeable visual difference for the concours guys?
N McGurk

Yes. "RAINBOW" is embossed on the bade carrier frame. NOS would be okay if you could buy replacement rubbers. Pictures here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et112b.htm

Why not keep a nice pair of original blades for show, and a proper pair that actually work for "go" ?

Having original wipers is fine but for my money when it rains I'd rather have a good set of uprated arms and blades to allow me to see where I'm going.

You can or could adapt wiper blade refills to fit the OEM blade holders. I still see refills at the various parts stores here that will work.

Someone who pays $204 for a pair of wiper blades does not drive their car in the rain. It's a show only car.
Ed Bell

My goodness! I'm going to have to look at my wiper blades! If I have Rainbows, and if anyone would like a set of OEM, used to death blades, I would probably let them go for about $50 apiece. I would even pay shipping.
Mike Parker

I've got some, new old stock, rubber is perfect and they work brilliantly. Paid £9.60 each for mine earlier this year and thought that was expensive!

Lindsay Sampford

Lucky you Lindsay! Where did you find them?
N McGurk

Here Neil http://tinyurl.com/cw2tsre
They've still got some, I ordered a spare pair today.

Hi Lindsay,

As my car didn't come with wipers, I don't have anything to measure. Which size is correct for an MGA?

Thanks,
Larry
L Wheeler

I have the originals on mine.Years ago the repro ones that Moss sold were not chrome or marked but the rubber fit my originals.
gary starr

Larry, unless you have a very early MGA (see Barney's site and the section about wipers) you need 8" or 200mm. I have ordered 200mm ones from Vintage Car Parts for my car, but I see the 8" ones are almost twice the price. It remains to be seen whether or not I receive 'Rainbow' blades, but when they arrive I will let you know.
Lindsay Sampford

Larry and others, the 200mm wipers from Vintage Supplies are NOT Trico 'Rainbow', they are Tex. Good quality stainless steel wipers but not OEM. If you want 'Rainbow' it looks like the 8" Trico blades are the ones to order.
