MG MGA - Wire Wheels

I'm considering purchasing a new set of painted wire wheels for my MGA. Moss advertise three different sizes, 4" 4.5" and 5". I'm not sure what size my existing wheels are, or which part of the wheel to measure to ascertain what I have. Any recommendations on what size I should go for?

John ,I have fitted 5.5 inch MGC wheels to my MGA they fill the wheel arches as a modern car and enable you to fit 185x65x15 tyres which give almost the same rolling radius as 165x 15 tyres but with a much better choice of tyres.

48-spoke with 4" rim is original. The wider rims usually come in 60-spoke versions only. The look is different, so if originality is important to you then that's something to consider. Beyond that, more spokes makes a stronger (although slightly heavier) wheel. The wider rim allows for a wider tire that some people like. The steering will get heavier, but overall traction will be improved. Handling may become a little less predictable, but only because the tires are hanging on longer before they start to slide. Any of the wheels will work on an MGA, so it's really personal choice.

The wheel width measurement is taken at the tyre beads inside the flange. With tyres on its difficult, you need calipers. But it should be stamped on the rim.

The MGC rims are perfect for the MGA use - but IIRC they are not 5.5" they are 5". If you want 5.5" wires, you need to buy TR5/6 rims, not MGC.

The 5.5" rims with 185x70-15s work perfectly on an MGA.

These aren't wires, they are knock off steel Dunlops, and the offset is a little more than on the wires, but they are carrying the quoted size of tire.

John,
If you are interested I have a set of five 4x15 48 spoke (as original) wheels which were bought for me as a birthday present some years ago and which I have not used.

They were supplied by Moss and have been kept indoors untouched since purchase.

I won't be wanting to change my steel wheels now so I would be open to offers for the set.............Mike

Mike yes I'm interested. Perhaps you could email me your phone No and I'll call you when convenient to you, and we could discuss further. John
