MG MGA - Year of Manufacture

Hi ,
I purchased my MGA some 17 years ago from a fellow in Queensland and the Registration papers indicated the year of Manufacture was 1955. My chassis/Vin Number is HDD 2313741. Could somebody let me know if the car is a genuine 1955 manufactured car or has the chassis been changed. I have completed a partial restoration of the car during my ownership and it is now near concourse.
Thanks for any help provided.

The breakdown is as follows:

H - MGA
D - Roadster
D - Blue
2 - RHD Export
3 - Cellulose
13741 - About March 1956

1956 numbers started at 11145 and got to 20671 in September 1956.

So your car is 1956, not 1955.

Dear Steve,
Thank you for your response which I really appreciated. Indeed, I suspected that when the car was re-registered in Queensland where I purchased it from the previous owner that it was mistakenly taken as a 1955. Unfortunately, it is now a very difficult to have the year of Manufactured altered at the NSW Motor Registry and I have to live with the wrong manufacture year for the paperwork.
Thank you again and I trust that you are enjoying your car as I do mine.
Kind regards,

You can get hold of a Heritage Certificate for the car. It will give the exact date of manufacture and export plus build data with optional extras included in the build.

If you're really wanting to change the date
You will need written proof of the date of your car, like a Heritage certificate, then there is a form that you can fill in to change your vehicle details.
I believe that if the car is currently registered you won't need to have an inspection ,just roll up to any service centre with the form(that you'll probably need to get off them anyway) and your written proof (has to be an original certificate--no photocopies) and it's done--

Hi Roland
I agree with Willie, it isn’t hard if you have some evidence. I had one of my cars build date adjusted one year less on showing the relevant paperwork (VicRoads) a few years ago. Road authorities have nothing to gain or lose adjusting the build date a couple of years for a sixty year old car. I suggest you go and have a chat with them to see what proof they need to adjust your car details.

Hi Roland, if you wish to register your car in NSW then it will depend upon were it was assembled and the type of registration you want. If you want historic rego then contact your local car club and what is submitted on the application form is usually used by the R.M.S. if you are using the old rego papers as a purchase receipt then have a heritage certificate for a UK assembled car or contact the MGA registrar of your local MG Club or Gary Kemm of the Vic club for Australian assembled cars for the build date. For full rego the inspection station usually does not require the old rego papers and will fill in the blue slip according to the information you give them so show them the heritage certificate or Australian build info if required and again at the R.M.S. if you don't show the old rego papers then no one will know the incorrect date. In the 60's build dates were not recorded on cars or rego papers rather the year of sale was recorded so it's quite possible for a car built in '55 to be recorded as a 56's car. My MGA was one of the last assembled and was 1st registered well after the release of the MGB so there are MGB's "older" than it. In your case probably a "typo" occurred at some time but I don't think you should change anything because the information is period correct and you will possibly open a hornets nest for no gain.
