MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - 13sec daily Driven MGB!

Well, it only took a couple weeks, but the call of the drag strip finally got full hold on me and I bit the bullet. I took my recently completed MGB V8 up to our local track www.pacificraceways.com in Seattle WA for street legal night.

After a brief tech inscpection that included telling me I needed a helmet (which I had), I was given my number and pointed to the staging lanes.. The first 5 runs I started strong but shut down mid track for fear of running so fast I had to have a rollbar. (Mine does not fit with me in car, so I will be getting a custom one) After that I was given green light to open her up and started full runs. She CONSISTENTLY ran 13.825-13.989 second runs @ 100+mph in the 1/4mile, time after time. For detailed run info check the folling link.. results

The biggest limitation was tires, quickly followed by fear of breaking the stock MGB rear axle. But she was squeeling tires in every gear and I gave notice to more than a few Domestic big block cars...

Good job Larry! Next step is a posi rear and a set of slicks to really give that rear end a good work out!!

Posi rear will come whenever I get the $$ and time to sort out a 8.8" ford, I am starting to watch wrecking yards now. Seem like local yards want 2x national avg rate for items. Friends tell me $50 8.8" rears in yards all around them, I got quoted $100+ both places I checked..

Then there is narrowing and then matching normal MGB bolt pattern.

The six cylinder Maverick and Comet 8 inch Fords of circa 1970 had the MG PCD. As you will need wider wheels anyway, why not have wheels made with the offset to the outside so you wont't have the expense of narrowing the track and stadard axles will always be available?
George B.

MG PCD?? you lost me on that..? Are they narrower than a MG what about bolt circle?? I like the idea of standard axles.. I am going to have my wheels custom done anyway, though I wanted front and rears all the same for sake of easy rotating to balance wear..
Larry Embrey

PCD = Pitch Circle Diameter = Bolt Circle

Growler

They are wider than the MG, about 52 inches from inside of backing plate to inside of backing plate. By same PCD, I mean that the MG wheels will mount directly on the lugs. The mounting faces of the wheels must be toward the outsides of the wheels to compensate for extra width, by whatever amount you wish, depending on fender flares and such.
George B.

What is the MGB axle width, outside of drum to outside of drum?? I always thought it was like 53 or 54"...
Larry Embrey

I don't have a B to measure, but as the measurements I gave were inside the drums the Ford will still be wider.
George B.

When I sent my rear end to currie, I specified a width of 51" flange to flange.
Michael Hartwig

Larry,

The width of my '78 axle is 52" from the outside of the drums.
Michael Willis

Glad to hear you got the car running.
