MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - 16 inch rims?

Anyone know of any decent 16" x 7 " rims ET30 which would fit the B hub?

Ditto that request! I've had an extremely hard time locating 4x4-1/2" rimse with proper offset for my GT conversion. I have Wilwood discs on front and rear..I tried Minilyte 15" bolt ons...may POSSIBLY work with spacers and longer studs.

Just go to one of the tire websites and search for rims with a 4x4.5 bolt pattern and go from there? I'm using a 15" konig diva wheel with a 4x4.5 pattern and 32mm positive offset. Only rubbing is on the INSIDE, not the normal outside. They should make them in 16" as well.

I used 15x7 wheels with Wilwood calipers on my RB.
No rubbing.

Panasport does make a 16' minilite wheel for MGB's. I have spoken to them and it is a 16x6. I think they also make a 16x7.

Is there any problems fitting 7" wide rims under standard guards or do they have to be modified.

Don't limit the search to MGB wheels only. Nissan 240,260 and some early 280 have the same bolt pattern.

Graeme - fitting any width of rim depends mainly on the offset of the rim. Even a 5" rim with the wrong offset might foul the inner or outer part of the arch depending upon the offset - known often as the ET (I don't know why). The offset is a way of measuring where the centre line of the rim is in relation to where the rim bolts up against the hub.
If you had a 5" rim which had the bolt holes right at the inner edge of the rim then when the wheel was attached to the car its outer edge would protrude out of the wheel arch and the rear wheel would probably foul the wheelarch lip quite badly. If the bolt holes were at the outer edge of the wheel then when fitted, the wheel would be deeply recessed in the wheel arch and would certainly foul the inner arches front and back.

Someone here will describe it more elegantly and also tell us all how the measurement is taken. I had it explained to me once and although I understood it for a fleeting moment I soon became confused again.
All I can say now is that my SAAB alloys which are 15 x 7" have an offset of ET30 and they fit my car. I had to make a couple of adjustments to the car but this was to compensate for the lack of symmetry in the rear body shell and for a poorly produced front anti-roll bar. If the car had been made with precision in the first place then the wheels would have fitted perfectly with no other work necessary.

I get the impression that the wider the wheel then the more critical the question of the offset becomes as there will be less tolerance within the wheel arch.

A wheel with a 30mm positive offset will have the wheel mounting face 30mm OUTWARDS from the center line of the rim.

A wheel with a 0mm offset will have mounting face in the dead center of the wheel.

A wheel with a 30mm negative offset will have the wheel mouting face 30mm INWARDS from the center line of the rim.

Positive offset moved the wheel closer to the inside of the car, and negative offset moves the wheel closer to the outside of the car. Anything with 32mm or less will fit a B with only slight modifications to the inside of the wheel well. At 32mm of positive offset, and standard steel wheel tube type axle, one shouldn't have any outside rubbing issues with any size tire up to 205/60/15.

On a more personal note, with a standard tube type axle, and 18" wheels with 30mm positive offset, 225/40/18's fit and don't rub anywhere. Though I wouldn't recommend putting those on a B.

Justin: what about interference with suspension and steering components on the INSIDE of the wheel on the fronts with 30mm offset? 15" rims will give more clearance there but what about 14"? Also, if changing from the standard 5" width wheels to 6" should the offset be increased or decreased from the standard 22mm? I understand offset but still am confused on just what wheel diameters, widths, and offsets will in combination fit a B. Hope you can help on this since trial and error is a long painfull process.

I agree, Terry. My wheels fit very well but had they been 14" rims they would definitely have interfered with the tie-rod end.

I didn't have any up front internal issues *until* I went to a 7/8" roll bar, and now it rubs on full turn. I haven't noticed any rubbing on the tie rod ends as of yet.

A 5" wheel with a 22mm offset will have about 3.37" to the inside and 1.63" to the outside of the wheel. A 6" wheel with a 22mm offset will have about 3.86" to the inside, and about 2.14" to the outside. Now if we go to a 6.5" wheel with a 30mm offset we get 4.5" to the inside and 2" to the outside. The majority of the widness is to the inside, and the tire doesn't have to bulge beyond the edge of the rim as much because of the additional rim width. Right now I have 1" of clearance to the outside wheel wells with 6.5" rims, 40mm offset, and 195/60/15 tires. I also have a .25" wheel spacer between the brake drum and the wheel to eliminate rubbing on the inside. There's arguably too much clearance on the outside of my wheels, but I could easily go 205/50/15 and get some more rubber on the ground, and close up that gap. Incidentally, I'm putting IRS under my car in about 2 weeks which is 2" wider then the stock axle, so my inch should nicely disappear.

I'd say start looking at places like tirerack.com for a wheel that you like, and if it's got the bolt pattern, the width, and less then 40mm of offset, take it. It'll fit just fine.
