MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - 1973 MGB conversion

I have a 1973 B that I bought new. It has original paint and body, never even dented except a couple of parking lot dings but the car has not run for the last several years. I am getting ready to fix it up and although the car has less than 60K actual miles it doesn't appear to be a "Classic" that should be restored. I am seriously considering converting to V6/V8 project. I have been reading and searching the internet and am about to get started, what lessons can you that have done this pass on? where should I start?

thanks,
Jack

I'm doing a v8 conversion using a fuel injected 3.9l
engine i got from a 91' Range rover, coupled to a Borg warner T5 trans.Seems like a very straight forward mod.I'm more than two thirds done.I would suggest getting all the parts rounded up first + all the "while i'm at it" parts. What i mean is once you have started, it ends up being, well for me at least a complete rebuild of all systems and accessories.Do it right the first time! Or end up doing it twice. If you need help give me a shout online.Best of luck!

For more on the V6 info, try these websites:

http://www.drive.to/bmc.com
http://www.v6mgb.com

From there, you will find links to quite a few different V6 conversions and sites. Fuel injected, carbureted, distributor and distributorless, many different styles and designs.
Most people are utilizing the T5 five speed as a bolt on item. Bellhousings, clutches and flywheels are a dime a dozen and NOT hard to find for the units that we use on our particular conversions. Search the archives or wait a little while and someone has got to post some of the V8 sites... Also, someone probably has the new web address of the new British car conversion newsletter???
Formerly (?) the MGB V8 Newsletter.

Jack, the most modern conversion for the V6 using a stock 160 HP GM engine is on the website at www.killerbv6.com. This engine is tuned for 195 HP.
The 1974 MGB GT shown has a 1992 3.1 engine. The latest version manifold looks different but is just as easy to install but has 200 HP.

Jack,

A one owner original car - original engine? I would call that a classic to be preserved. Uprating the engine would be as far as I would go. For advice on this Steve S has an article see B threads or the Peter Burgess book on modifying B engines.

If you still wish to go with a V8 then the book How to give your MGB V8 Power by Roger Williams will take you through the process.

My 2 cents worth

No rust, no dings, good paint? Tough call. If you do go for a bigger engine though try to go with the Rover as that way it stays all British and will recieve wider acceptance if that is a concern. If not the V6 should be easier, particularly in terms of steering clearance. If you do go for the bigger engine and complete the project, you won't regret it.

I can't get the May or Sept. web sites to come up.

Lyle,

#&*%#% AOL! They were coming up OK. If you can't get them to come up later, let me know, and I'll e-mail them to you. Anyone else having trouble downloading them? Let me know, and I'll do a mass mailing to get everyone at one mailing. They are large files!
Dan Masters

Dan,
I was able to download them fine on Jan 3 or 4. Thanks. Yeah, probably AOL.
