MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - 3.07 rear gears installed (finally)

I just got done with installing the Clive Wheatley 3.07 gears into my MGB rear end and wow what a difference! It turns the car into the real deal. Remember how much better your V8 felt than the four banger? this change takes it to the next level. I would recomend this change to anyone.

Thanks to Clive for the gears also Chris Nolan for the info on the carrier rebuild instructions on the Moss website and finally to the 4X4 ford website (the MGB diff is almost identical to a Ford 8.8").

This is not a job for the average Joe, it takes time and measure, measure, measure everything.

I put a Ford/Currie 9 inch Limited slip differential 3.00:1 ratio w/31 spline axles. The pumpkin is also availabe in Aluminum. Mine was ordered with rear disk brakes included and emergency brake. I paid less then $2500.00 but that was a few years ago

I forgot to add I also got a tee shirt. :)

how much did you machine the carrier?
Richard Morris

I took 0.215" off the carrier. This will make the bolt shoulder (non threaded part) to long. I added .125" spacers under each crown wheel bolt.

The carrier needs to be setup dead nuts +/- .002 when indexed off the crown wheel face. this took a while. I used the bearing flange to get this right. Don't use the machined surface of the bearing boss. It's not machined true to the crown wheel flange and will return a .015" runout (way to much).

On the Moss site, are you referring to the rear axle clunk articles in MGB tech tips? (If not, can you provide a link?)
Richard Morris

Hi Richard,

Yes that is the article I used. Of course it is much easier to do with the carrier removed from the housing.

Here is the link for the Ford site I mentioned as well.

As a side note I should mention that I needed to fabricate my own carrier shims as Moss does not carry them. I needed to move the carrier .004 to the left to get the backlash correct. Maybe someone knows where to get these?

The Ford link is excellent. And it it is giving me enough courage to take mine apart. I plan on machining the carrier myself. (Did you do that and if so, any gotcha's on that?).

The only issue I have at this point is that my 1st gear in the Rover transmission has a problem and I basically can't use it. Will I run into a real problem if I put the 3.07 gears in with no 1st gear? (try it for me, how workable is no 1st gear with the 3.07?)
Richard Morris

Hi Richard,

sorry this took so long. Taking off in 2nd gear is not recomended. It was OK... on flat ground but on any kind of hill I had to slip the clutch a lot. The clutch won't last long but it sounds like you need a gearbox before the rear end.

That's what I was thinking might be the problem. And my engine has a pretty lumpy idle and is more of a high rpm so the clutch slipping would be even worse. I posted this question on 2 threads elsewhere just to see what others say.

I am also looking at the quaife that's on eBay now. It's at a really decent price. Have you heard any bad things about a quaife? I searched threads, but struck out on any comments. I suspect they are too pricey to be very popular, but I could get it and wait till the transmission is done to put it and the 3.07 gears in.

Thanks for trying 2nd gear for me.

From everything I read or heard the Quaife posi is a good unit but expensive. If it has the gears (ring & pinion) it might OK on price if you subtract the $600 US for the Wheatley gear set. What gearbox are you using?
M Mallaby

Mark,

I have a question to ask you about your car. What exhaust are you using? Can you shoot me an email with the details please. Did you cut inner fenders or are you using block huggers.

Thank you,

David

Hi David,

I used the RV8 style thru the fender type. I think it helps cool the engine bay and allows room to work.

Hope this helps.
