MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Altanator for V8

I have a AC Delco altanator on a MGB that has a part number of 7982980. I ordered a altanator from Moss for a MGB and it will not bolt up. The car had a V8 installed by "Andy" and of course no information as to where this altanator came from. Does any one else had this problem?

The original will not bolt up due to a braket that was installed on the V8. Please help!

Back when I bought an AC Delco alternator to adapt tom the Buick V8 in my MGB I just went to a parts house like Checker or Pep Boys and asked for an alternator for a Nova. I figured that was a very common application that I could get anywhere. This was years and years ago and is still holding up without a problem. I did see the plug on the side was not in the ideal location in relation to then mounting lugs, but correcting that was a five-minute job. There are four bolts holding the front half of the case the back half and removing those allows the back half with the plug to be rotated relative to the front half with mounting lug. Just be sure to keep the two half from separating. You should have no trouble taking your old Delco alternator to any parts store that caters to American cars and ask them to find something similar such as from a ’73 Nova or a Camero.

Leroy,
Does it look like this?

I think this is the type Andy had been using.

Kelly,
No this does not look identical. I'll take a photo and send. The problem is the electrical connection will not permit the mounting of the original type. The connector contacts the valve cover.

Leroy,
But could it fit, would the connector clear, if you were able to rotate the halves of the case like George suggested? That's what worked on mine, as the terminal on the back hit the valve cover. Like he says, try to not pull the halves too far apart, or you have to fiddle with getting the brushes back in their holders. Gently pry them apart with a screwdriver to get them far apart enough to turn. Joe

Here’s what the back of the alternator I used looks like http://www.alternatorparts.com/12si_rear_view.htm notice the slot is near the rear, but is actually on the side. It uses a connector like the white one as shown here http://www.teglerizer.com/alternator/wiring.htm The older GM alternators use a more square shaped plug that sticks out the back and fouls the valve cover.

Looking into the alternator where the plug goes you can see male blade connectors. Standard female blade connectors slip on these and are what is inside the plastic plugs as shown on the second site. Rather than cutting the wires as recommended on that site I slipped a thin knife blade into each the MG plastic connector cover and the GM plastic connector cover to hold the prong down on the female connector and carefully removed it from the plastic cover. At first I just plugged the brown and brown with yellow wire straight on to the alternator terminals using the original MG female blade connectors, but later inserted those MG female connectors with the brown and brown with yellow wires into the GM white plastic plug to simplify alternator replacements.
