MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Alternators in Oz

Guys,
I was searching the archive pages and I found a thread that Barrie Egerton had added a comment on saying what alternator he was using unfortunately he did not say the part number just it was a Bosch 80 Amp unit. What alternators are other people using?

Motorola 55-amp. Works fine, profile is low.

Mine has a chrysler 60 amp. Its narrow enough to fit in front of the left clyinder head. Has been reliable for 15 years now.

Clem,

I'm using a VP Commodore alternator. Its output is 85 amps. I use this type on my Range Rover as well because the regulator will sense battery voltage high and low. It is held in by 2 screws with the internal electrical connections being spring loaded, making it very simple to change (no soldering). You'll need to make a mounting bracket. I've mounted mine low on the left hand side so you can't see it. Belt adjustment is done through an idler pulley off a Ford Laser.

Clem, neither of my alts. have a part no. All they have is "Bosch made in Australia" stamped on them.It all depends where & how you mount the alt. as to what type you use.One of mine was a 40 amp model, but an auto elec. fitted the inards of an 85amp alt. (out of a Holden Commodore) maintaining my front & back plates. This is physically the largest that will fit in front of the RH rocker cover. If it was any larger, the B+ terminal would short or the fan belt pulley wouldn't line up.If you opt for the original {MGB V8} type of mounting bracket, then a Bosch alt. that was used on a Ford Falcon or Chrysler Valient will fit.I'm told the 80amp model is no longer available. Email me if you think I can help any further. Regards Barrie E

Clem,

Any luck finding out this info? I'm searching for it as well....so-far this is what I have come up with...
1) MG City in brisbane sell new Bosch distributors that fit into MGB's (I was asking about a 4 cylinder). They didn't have one in stock the day I went in (so I couldn't get a part number!). They say they will have them in by the end of the week. $325 a pop.
2) None of the Bosch agents know which one it is. A fairly knowledgable agent said that no Bosch distributor fits in without modification (because Bosch never manufactured anything for BMC), and that MG City must be buying a particular bosch distributor in bulk and having them modified to fit.

I'm still searching for the answer though!

Whoops, sorry for the above message...I thought you were talking about distribors rather than alternators!
Anybody know anything about distributors in Oz?

There is a Bosch or a Bosch look-alike alt from a ??mid-80s?? Capri that is very short and bolts right in. Great if you use the starboard-upper mounting position. I have seen a couple installed in BV8s; all kinds of clearance to the starboard valve cover. Anyone know the particulars?
