MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Best oil for front lever shocks?
Now that I have fitted the RV8 style headers I have to fabricate new mounting brackets for my Spax shock absorber set up. Until I get this done, I will be running with the stock lever shocks but I have to refill them with the correct oil. What is the best oil to use for a slightly stiffer than stock front shock? Can I accomplish this with the shocks still on the car? Any info would be much appreciated. Martyn

Not 'oil' but hydraulic fluid. The correct stuff is also used for hydraulic jacks, can't comment on 'stiffer' alternatives, this is usually achieved by a change of valve. They can be *refilled* in situ, but probably not emptied. PaulH.

I've been using Mineral Oil. Yes, the same stuff that comes from the pharmacy as a laxitive. Mine leak and have since I got the car so it is a cheap easily obtained alternative. I've been filling mine monthly for 2 years. Since you are only using yours until you install the Spax, it may be the way to go. The mineral oil seems to be slightly heavier than hydraulic shock oil.

Castrol motorcycle fork oil works really well. I,ve used it in both stock valved & uprated shocks with good results. Dwight.

Thanks for the responses. I am going to use a 30 weight hydraulic fluid with the stock valves. I believe that 20 weight is the stock fluid. I would still like to hear from someone who retained the Spax shocks after fitting RV8 headers. I will be making a custom bracket and thought it might have already been done.

"Mine leak " ... if you will use a laxative ...

The stuff is available in 20, 30 and 40 weight, with 30 being the best all around. I wouldnt be afraid to use in a floorjack but I don't think I'd use it for a laxative, it smells pretty bad:)
