MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - British V8 2003

Make your reservations NOW! The 2003 British V8 Convention will be held May 1, 2, & 3, at the Highland Manor Inn (1-800-213-9462, http://www.highlandmanor.com ). There's a BUNCH of stuff going on that weekend, so be sure to get your reservations in early. Rates are 89.50 plus tax. Mention NAMBGR.

What's going on?

1. British Car Gathering 15 will be going on Saturday at the Best Western next door, with 180 British cars on hand.
2. The Townsend Old Time Music Festival will be taking place all around the area (That's COUNTRY music, Steve Carrick, REAL country music!)
3. The National Street Rod Association will be having their SE Nationals in Knoxville, with over 3500 street rods in attendance. This event brings every major hot rod/performance parts vender to the area, so it's a good chance to check out some parts you've been wanting for your British Street Rod!
4. Pigeon Forge: There's always a ton of things to do in Pigeon Forge, something for every member of the family, every one from toddlers to geezers, including even teenagers! Be sure to bring plenty of money for the wives - shopping is supreme in Pigeon Forge - three days won't be long enough to shop all the manufacturer's outlet stores. For the kids, there's everything from carnival rides to go-karts to a real gold mine where they can actually pan for gold.
5. Gatlinburg: A neat little "Art & Crafts" town, snuggled right next door to the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. You could easily spend an entire day in Gatlinburg alone. Don't miss Ripley's Aquarium. You'll want to visit the Village, and have breakfast at the Pancake House. Try their Lingonberry pancakes or, for lunch, the Polish Aristocrat sandwich. Or better yet, do what my wife and I do - buy one of each and split them.
6. The Great Smokey Mountain National park: The most visited park in the Nation, about two miles from the host motel. Top-down driving through the Smokies is a real treat, plenty of winding roads and lots of scenic vistas. Don't miss a drive through Cades Cove.
7. The Dragon! Don't forget the Dragon - 318 curves in 11 miles. People come from all over the world to drive this piece of highway. For insurance reasons, this won't be part of the event, but you may want to take a side excursion and check it out. About 2 hours from the motel. http://www.tailofthedragon.com
8. As if that weren't enough, we plan to have plenty to do ourselves. Event planning is still under way, but we hope to have enough to do to keep you away from the other things mentioned above, yet allow enough free time so you can take some of them in.

See you there!
Dan Masters

By the way, The Highland Manor is in Townsend, TN, about 25 miles or so from Knoxville, and about 2 miles from the Smoky Mountains.

If Rick Ingram can get there, so can I. I need to check some hooters in that area anyway.

OK, that's what we need - a challenge! If Martyn can make it from Canada and Bob can make it from Florida, no one else east of the Mississippi has an excuse.

Townsend is about 30 miles from I-75, a major north-south interstate, and roughly the same from I-40, a major east-west interstate. It's eighteen miles from my house, so I have no excuse!

Plans are still tentative, but here's what we're hoping to have so far:

Wednesday:

Registration and welcome party around the pool.

Thursday:

Continental breakfast, courtesy of the motel.
A morning drive to Newfound Gap (el app 5,000ft), with a stop on the way back at a picnic area along the river for lunch. A box lunch will be provided. Bring a coat, because it will be COLD at Newfound Gap, regardless of how warm it is in Townsend.
Afternoon is free so you can explore the area, maybe take a run at "The Dragon," a tour of Gatlinburg or Pidgeon Forge, or maybe a drive through Cade's Cove. Gatlinburg, Pidgeon Forge, and Cades Cove will be a short side trip
(2 - 8 miles) from our return route. The Dragon will be about a two hour drive. If you prefer the Dragon to Newfound Gap, you can take your box lunch with you and picnic there instead.
Restaurants are available across the street from the motel for dinner; adequate, but nothing to write home about.
Social hour(s) at the motel. Refreshments will be provided.

Friday:
Continental breakfast, courtesy of the motel.
Tour of Case's Cove - an interesting and scenic 11 mile drive through an old pioneer settlement area. Cade's Cove is about 9 miles from the motel.
Some of you may want to check out the Street Rod event in Knoxville - a good time to pick up some of that speed equipment you've been looking for. There will be dozens of venders there, and they usually offer discount prices at the show. Friday is a good day to go, as the crowds are not so large then, and parking is readily available.
Restaurants are available across the street from the motel for lunch.
Autocross.
Vendor displays.
Tech Sessions.
Catered barbecue dinner at the motel.

Saturday:

Breakfast drive along the Foothills Parkway to the "Top of the World" (el app 2,000ft - bring a coat). Pastries, bagels, coffee and juice will be served at the scenic overlook parking area. The more energetic may want to take a 1/2 mile hike up to the fire tower for a spectacular vista. For those that want to do the Dragon, this would be a convenient kick off point.
"Show and Tell" - Owner's tour of their cars: what was done, why it was done, how it was done, etc.
Vendor displays.
Tech Sessions.
Visit/entertain visiters from the British Car Gathering being held next door (there will be 180 cars at that event).
Drive through the Smokies along Little River Road to a restaurant in Gatlinburg for a banquet.

Sunday:

Farewell coffee and dounuts in the parking lot.

More details as they become available.

That's what they should do with Sewell Mountain in W.Va, an old bypassed stretch of US 60. Fun road.
We'll be there. Mike just had a breakthrough with the Crown Vic processor that controlls my fuel injection so I hape to have the car in a fine state of tune by then. Looking forward to it.

Dan, This will be the BEST area to have the show! Last & this Thanksgiving I will to go to Ark. to tell my dad happy birthday & on the way back we go to Deals gap & ride ALL around the dragon area (300 miles last year) on my 30 year old M/C. My brother & I & the TRIUMPH M./Cs will be there. This area is so neat that the V-8 will sit & I will be GONE on the bike!
Glenn Towery

Sue and I have our reservations and can't wait. Still high from Steve's excellent Grand Rapids Meet. The Grattan roadrace turf still stuck on the front spoiler is a great reminder both of the meet and my less-than-stellar driving! Really lookin' forward to TN.....Carl, I bought three books on autocross driving. Watch your ass next year!

Hey Kurt,

Barney didn't get to run autocross at the show this year, and he's hungry! Fresh G-Force tires, Watch out!
Steve Carrick

Steve Carrick...I understand you also have new rear springs to help your car track a tad better....curious as to if you stayed with fiberglass. rick
rick ingram

Rick
Yes I did stay with the Composite springs, for now. I,m not sure about the future, even with the new springs the ride height isn't where I would like it
Steve Carrick

Steve,

With all that horsepower, I bet all Barney will be doing is slinging his purple tail all over the course!
