MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Broke the rear axle

Well about 20 track days and general abuse has finally resulted with a broken half shaft. was on my way to fill up with fuel, went into second then bang!
No drive at all. Luckily had a spare axle so used a shaft from that.
Anyone else had problems?
Mark Rawlins

You broke a shaft??? stock MGB rear??? that is amazing, it must have had a defect from the factory or something becuase those shafts are SOLID units, every bit as stout as a Ford 8".

When I broke mine it was hammering down the track dumping the clutch at mid throttle every gear. Yes I was racing hard and proud of it!! With me it was the poor itty bitty spider gears that went bang..

I ended up doing similar, I snagged a rusting rear end from a friend and stoke the gears out of it and had it back on the road the next day, including re-installation of the entire top end of the motor as I had torn down for the season!! HEH, will do ANYTHING to drive the car and put it in a show..

That's got to be a first Mark. Larry, hadn't you put extra thrust washers in yours before it went? My ring and pinion finally went out - after 15 years behind several high output 215's. An acceptable life considering cost of replacement.

On a side note, I ordered the aluminum stock to make my IRS spindles.

YEah I was doing the poor mans posi. IT had already loosened back up though after 4 days of driving.

Can;t blame a guy for trying can yah!!??
Larry Embrey

That is why I went with the Ford/Currie 9 inch posi with 31 spline axles.

One of my planet gears broke in half, so did the shaft they are on ,chipped the ring and pinion, and opened my chrome diff cover from top to btm like a can opener!
I put in 2nd hand planet gears/shaft/cover by the side of the road, the hadest part was getting the oil in.
Then drove home,VERY noisy.........
On strip down both half shafts were twisted at the splines, this happened by the way at 40 mph.

As a matter of interest.
I have a quafe LSD fitted but when the half shaft broke i expected to have some forward movement.
Could I have a faulty unit or am I asking too much?
Mark Rawlins

Dave. You said the hardest part of your roadside repair was getting the oil back in the rear end. I saw an episode of Junkyards Wars where they had to do some mods to a diferential. To get it back together quickly they filled a zip-lock baggie with oil, tossed it into the diferential and bolted it up.

Mark,

I assume you have a quaiffe torque biasing diff.

When you break halfshaft or lift a wheel this type of diff will spin, it only work if both wheels have grip.
Dave Brooke

I have a half shaft where the serations at the hub end are definitely stretched. Instead of being straight they are sort of S shaped.

I swapped it out before they shear off completely and let me down.

Larry what kind of times are you running with that MG you got?
Dude

I was running 13.8 @ 102 consistent. Came down to no traction with stock rear end and tires. Not to mention the stock gearing had me allmessed up and I had to launch in 2nd and then go to 5th at about 1000ft, which really kills ET and speed.

8.8 rear with posi and gears, plus extra 50-70ponies under the hood, should get me kicked off track pretty quickly.
