MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Buick 3.8L conversion kit

I was up at D & D Fabrications a couple of weeks ago and on one of the benches was a practically new Buick 3.8L V-6. Dan is planning on debut of his 3.8L V6 conversion kit at the V8 Meet in Terre Haute.

Deja vu?

Installing a 3.8 is just as much work as doing a 90 degree V8. I look in to doing one. Great that they are doing a kit.
I have a V8 and a V6 3.4

I will not be able to attend this year, pay check first. I was really looking foward to attend. Thanks to all of those who work hard on the event.

It sounds like possibly the same engine as built under licence over here for our GM Commodores (till a year or two ago). Good reliable engine - but the one over here has always been criticized as having a harsh sounding engine (not necessarily exhaust).

I don't think putting a Commodore engine in a 'B would jell down here in Aus. - nor a Nissan engine as mentioned in another thread. That is not to say they couldn't be used to produce an excellent driveable car. (I have a Commodore). Rather, the resale value of the 'B would be adversely affected here.

(And please.. I'm not trying to start another 4 vs 6 vs 8cyl debate!)

Good news! Since the 3.8 has been used by GM in Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Chevy. cars and vans. Must be millions of them around.. from 2-barrel van engines to supercharged Buick Gran Nationals! Lots of possibilities and good supply of after-market performance parts to boot! Marc

Yes!!! and different mounting bosses, it's so much fun.

Looking all the different combinations uneven fire early version until 79 Normal 3.8, I generation, II gen, and III gen different heads timing covers etc. yes same block different mounting bosses etc.
Tons of them around for the same amount of work install a Ford V8 and use Carricks Coyote, "Beep, Beep" headers, PAW Ford Ranger mounts, Ford radiator from NAPA, modified B cross member, Canton oil pan and that is your V8 kit. OH YEA!!! Beep, Beep Labor.
If you want FI go to Larry's web page, great work!

I did just that, except the headers, Coyote did not had the headers when I did my conversion. Those headers look good when i saw them in Grand Rapids (demo set?)
Paul

Paul- I couldn't find the v-6 3800 oil pan at Canton, and had to fab my own headers, as there was nothing on the market, using 1 &7/8 pipe collars formed into rectangles to match stock ports, then coning down to the 1 1/2 primaries, all carefully matched in length to 38 inches before collection. The OBDII was a lesson in frustration, having never known a PCM, BCM, VATS, VSS, spoofer, goofer, or Ohh-Poo-Bee-Doo before in my life! Not a single cut or hammer to originally mount the beast, then mutilation to get the TB underhood and the drivebywire working, aided by gobs of Miracle paint and fiberglass cloth, and replacement of structural bracing after a breakdown purchase of Lincoln 100 flux welder ( gawd what a difference over the H.orror F.raid garbage I'd been using for the last 3 years!)whenever needed. A significantly modified cross member for the oil filter clear and to drop the engine height under bonnet. As much work as a V-8? Prolly! Waiting now for my decision to use the cut down stock Camaro axle and disc brakes, or go S-10. Thereafter, the rubber meets the road by George, Larry, Moe, or Schemp. Have I lost it...naw naw naw...I think so. Vic
