MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Buick V6 type?

Well, just picked up 65 B w/ buick v6 T5.
would really like to know what type/year v6. Have the book showing where the #'s should be. Does not seem to be there.
PO installed, made lots of notes.. except basic #'s for motor.
Has 2bbl carb. any clues I might look for to determine what I am working with here?
thx,

cm roche,
considering you don't know the year there are many places it could be. If you know for sure its a Buick, check the rear right or left side of cylinder block near flywheel housing, center of left valve cover, left rear of oil pan, or front of block above timing cover. Look for something like "LD5", "LC4", "L27" etc. then report back.

I'll do that or rather I'll ask my son to check - at work today next 6 hours or so.. if can't locate him (being 17 thats not always possible..=) ) I'll check tonight and get back.

Chuck, you should be made aware that the early V6 Buick had a Skip fire type firing system that cause the engine to shake violently when it idled. You cannot fix it cause it ain't broke. GM had no way to machine the cranks on the early V6's. They really did cut off 2 cylinders on a V8. They fixed the problem in the 70's. Look at your rotor cap. If it has an 8 cylinder cap on it you screwed the pooch. Sorry to tell you this but better now then to regret it later. You might have gotten lucky and got a car that the engine was replaced with a later V6. If you would want a better engine set up with gobs of power go to http://www.killerbv6.com/ Good Luck, Dann

Wade,

The Odd-Fire Buick had a 120 degree crankshaft, but because of the common throws beween the odd and even bank cylinders on a 90 degree block, the firing alternated between 150 and 90 degrees. The distributor cap only looks like a V8 with two blanked holes. You will see that the inside of the cap has the contacts offset from the holes to accomplish the odd-fire configuration. It does vibrate a bit, but actually can be brought closer to balance than can the later even-fire engines until GM put a balance shaft in the 3800 series. Even-fire was made possible by off-setting the common crank jounals by 15 degrees in ech direction. The 1979 and up engines have the best breathing heads.

It runs! Been id'd as an 82 3.8
Now for the fine tuning. Fun continues.

that would be an LD5 engine.
some usefull general info

HP at rpm..........110 @ 3800
Torque at rpm......190 @ 1600
Compression ratio.. 8:1
Bore............... 3.80 in.
Stroke............. 3.40 in.

in stock form this would give good performance in a B,
but you can see that it doesn't like to rev, making its max torque and hp at very low rpm.
