MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Chevy 2.8 V6 Auto Tranny Question

I'm in the process of looking for the complete drivetrain from a 3rd generation Camaro or Firebird to swap into my GT. I want to go with the automatic tranny. Does anyone know the year that the auto went to computer controlled? And is this really a problem? I understand you can use a converter lockout switch and everything will work fine. Is this correct information? Any help guys?
Terry M

1993 was the last year that I know of that had a transmission that was not computer controlled - 4L60. It does have an electronic speedometer, though.

In '94 and later, they were 4L60E (E for electronic).

Wayne is correct. Although to add to the confusing information on them, the 93 4L60 (not 4L60-E) is supposed to be a renamed 700R4 but I am not sure if the wiring is the same.

Unless you already have a 2.8L RWD motor, you really should be searching for an 'L32' 3.4L out of a 93-95 Camaro/Firebird. The 2.8L stuff will bolt right to it if you want to run carburetion and the 3.4L has the new SFI system which works very well in both auto and manual form. You can pick up an auto from an S10 or Camaro with the 2.8/3.1L motor and the loss of BHP will be made up with the 3.4L. We remove all the controls that the motor has to do with speed and so on and keep the SFI which runs great with automatics and manuals.

Thanks for the replys. My intention is to grab whatever I can find that is cheap enough, and get my car up and going. I can then watch eBay, etc. and pick up a 4.3 to rebuild the way I want it for later. So.... can I use the later tranny and use a lockup switch? Any thoughts?
Terry M

Terry, I hope the 4.3 figure you used in your last post was a typo, the 4.3 Chevy doesn't use the same transmission bolt pattern as the 2.8-3.4 series engines, so if you wanted to change from a 2.8-3.4 to a 4.3 the transmission would have to be changed also.
Bill Young

Thanks Bill, its a typo. I meant 3.4
Terry M

That's an expensive way to go about it.

Maybe better to just do it once properly? You shouldn't have any problem finding a Camara 3.4 engine and trans to put in straight away, and the time spent on rebuilding it isn't significant.
Bill Spohn

I'm on a very tight budget, and I just picked up a 91 automatic Camaro too cheap to refuse. So it looks like I'm going the 3.1/700R4 route. I know there are ways to spend more money and go faster, but this Camaro runs very well for this middle aged guy and I can't wait to drop the powertrain into a car that weighs a lot less.
Terry M

I used a 91 Camaro donor car and have the 3.1 and 700R4. Ihave had it on the road for 2 years and really love the performance. I sill have the stock 3.9 rear gear. I am running 205/75-14 tires and 80 mph is about 2800 rpm. It gets 22 to 27 mpg on regular gas. Quarter mile speed is 84-86 and standing start mile is 111.6 at Maxton,NC. It is a fun car to drive.
Mine is a 1970 MGB-GT with AC.
You'll really like th auto trans, it makes driving in traffic really easy.
Maybe you could make the British V8 get together in Ohio this year. Lots of nice cars there.

Good Luck

Terry; What did you do for exhaust manifolds.I am starting the same set up.

Sandy, I assume your question is for Steve. I haven't done anything yet.
Terry M

STEVE
What did you use for ex-manifolds on the 2.8.
Sandy
Sandy Sanders

I used a 3.1 engine. I used the kit from Classic conversions. It comes with engine mounts and exhaust manifolds. Guzman, who runs Classic Conversions if very helpful.
I did not use his trans crossmember though. I modified the MG crossmember. I had to move it back some also.

Good Luck
