MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - EFI and A/C help needed

Hopefully someone has had this problem and addressed it.
I am fitting a 4.2 Rover with Hotwire fuel injection. The plenum assembly has been lowered and fits under the hood perfectly. Today I mounted the A/C compressor using D&D's brackets. It mounts on the left hand side of the engine (drivers side in the USA). I now have nowhere to put the mass airflow sensor and air filter as the compressor occupies the space needed.
Any ideas?

With all that we have to change on the old M.G. to put in a V-8, weather it is Rover, Ford or Chev., auto 4, 5, or 6sp. Tony take the 6 bolts out that hold the plenum down & turn it a 180 deg., were the air opening is on the pass. side of the car. Cut the wire harness back & get the wires out that go to the ft. of the manifold & make the wires longer that goes to the stepper moter. I use the rover hoses that go from the valve cover to the plenum, to the trumpet stack with the T to the air box & out to the stepper motor. I will try to get a pic. off to you tues. to help you out.

Hi Glenn
I wondered whether you could just turn the plenum around. Does the idle valve (now at the front after rotating the plenum) get in the way of the top hose or disti?
I look forward to the pics, please send them to tony@batesfamily.net

Tony-

I started where you did, carb'ed 215 with A/C, brackets from D & D.

I had the advantage of being able to drive over to Glenn Towery's shop a couple of times to look at his FI GT & spend some time jawing over the process. Saved me a lot of time & head scratching, plus I picked up some parts while I was at it.

I already had all the parts cut down, but a trial fit showed I needed a bit more room. Per Glenn, I mounted the injectors & fuel rail, then proceeded to lower the rail by hitting the mounting legs with a hammer & 3/8" extension. This allowed me to have another 3/8" cut off the bottom of the trumpet section which solved my clearance problem.

There was no room for the air flow meter & an air filter in the factory location, same situation as yours, since the a/c compressor was in the way. Again, per Glenn, I turned the plenham 180' & solved the problem. I had previously stripped the wiring harness of all tape & plastic covers, so re-forming the harness, shortening & lengthing the wires was easy. I then re-taped & routed the wires to eliminate the spagetti look. Everything clears. The vacuum hoses get a little tight in back with the A/C lines & fuel lines, but I got it all in place without looking bad.

I finished up the fuel tank, fuel & return lines today, so maybe next weekend it will run. I had Glenn modify a new gas tank, opening it up & adding a swirl pot & a new 1/2" fuel outlet to feed the external Bosch pump which has a 1/2" inlet, 5/16" outlet. I found a fuel pump & filter assembly from a Volvo. these are mounted on a steel plate which is mounted to a second plate with 3 rubber isolators. After cutting away a lot of the base plate, I attached it to the side of the battery box. Good access to change the filter & in line with the original fuel line & close to the original fuel pump wiring. This was a location suggested by Dan Masters a few years ago.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the input and advice, I too have machined the plenum and stack, a total of 27.3mm and it goes under my hood (MGC) with about an 1/8" clearance. When you turned the pleanum around 180 degrees, was it just the plenum top or the plenum and the trumpet stack? I am a long way from starting the engine, I am still at the "how will it fit" stage.
Although I live in California I "commute" to work in Virginia, Sterling to be precise, about 20 minutes west of Dulles. Are you located anywhere nearby in Maryland?

Tony-

I left the trumpet section in the original orientation because it was simpler to hook up the vacuum lines that way, but no reason you couldn't spin it if you prefer.

I rent space in a hobby shop in Newington, Va. Rt 95 South of 495 to Fullerton road exit. I would be glad to meet you after work almost any evening, & I seem to live there on the weekends.

You, and anyone else interested, are more than welcome, just give me a days notice if you plan on coming during the week. I could not get there until around 6:00 P.M.

Hi Jim,
Sterling is off 267 near Herndon. The company doesn't allow car rentals when I am in town so it doesn't look like I can make it, but thanks anyway. Re the trumpet section, I will leave it the original way round. I'm in the UK on biz at the moment so will try it all this weekend when I get back to California
Thanks for your help.
