MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Engine noise, Ticking

Since getting my car back on the road I have been plagued by a noise. A metallic ticking noise that speeds up when the engine is revved.
Definately coming fron the left hand bank.
The engine was used when I bought it but hadnt done much work. ( came from a Y2K Discovery ).
First I checked the lifter preload. ( twice )
Then I replaced all the lifters with high rev ones from Real Steel and re checked preload.
No difference.
I then took apart the rocker assembly, everything was the right way round etc. and looked fine.
In desperation I took off the RV8 exhaust manifolds and found that the ports and flanges didnt match and the gaskets were showing signs of blowing slightly.
I adjusted the flange holes by welding and die grinding, a long process but I finally got each one perfect.
Still no difference.
I am running out of ideas as to the cause of this annoying noise.
Anyone had a similar problem or a suggestion of a remedy.

Thanks

I know one problem that Rovers have is exhaust valves sticking in the guides.Carbon colects in the bottom of the guide and will eventually hold the valve open until the piston hits it.I do machine work for the local Rover dealer, and see a fair number of heads with this problem. We install a lot of cam bearings for them also(they could have paid for their own cam bearing tool ten fold by now!).The bearings I remove generally are quite badly worn, possibly even enough to affect oil pressure to the lifters I suppose.I am not sure what the symptons are that prompt the dealer to want them changed, never asked.I can find out more specifically if you want...

P.S.Thats Vermont,not Vermon.Although Vermin would be a suitable nickname.......

Mark,

I have exactly same noise on right bank from drivers seat and manifolds blowing. I've tried left bank without gasket without success and now trying with paste. The 3.5 had neither of these problems and I'm wondering whether standard manifold can handle 4.6?

This may be totally off-mark but a mate of mine had an untraceable metallic ticking which turned out to be something catching (crank or similar I presume)on the dipstick.
For what it's worth!

My engine (motley assortment of parts based on 4.2 block, but carefully dialed in) ticks too, once per rev just as you say. Always mildly worried about it. After a _heck of a lot_ of trouble-free miles though I don't think it amounts to much. The thing runs like a top. Now, having said that, it'll probably crap out this afternoon ...
