MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Engine temp. What Is Normal

My engine temperature gauge hardly rises above the N,

even in summer, the fans come on ok.If I fit a gauge with numbers on what is the correct running temp in degrees?.

It depends on what thermostat and cooling fan switch you have. On my car if the needle is pointing just to the cold side of the N its 180F,(82C)if the needle is just to the hot side of the N its 195F,(90C)
It looks like your temp is about right where it needs to be!
Hope this helps

Kevin - did you really mean 'N' i.e. Normal i.e. the centre of the gauge or did you mean 'C' i.e. at the left of the gauge? Like Bill says, don't see what you have to worry about. I will say that my factory V8 used to rise to about 1/2-way between N and the red before the fans cut in. Replacing the Otter switch with one from SU-Burlen reduced this to about 1/4-way.

Bill,Paul,
Sorry to confuse,I should have said C.I do have a Kenlowe thermo switch fitted and two rover maestro fans {they have bigger blades than standard mg fans}.I have also cut off the bottom section of the radiator support brackets from just below the middle
bolt of the three that hold the radiator to the side
brackets.My aim

was to avoid overheating problems by increasing the airflow.SO maybe I could turn up the fan switch without being paraniod about running to hot. Thanks for interest.

The fan stat setting, size of fans etc. should not cause engine temps lower than 'N'. This is because no matter how much cooling is applied to the rad the engine thermostat will regulate coolant flow through the rad so that a temp around 'N' is maintained. If you are not getting above 'C' then either the gauge is bad or the engine stat is stuck open. The latter can be checked by feeling the top hose while the engine warms up from cold. The hose and the top of the rad should stay cool for a while, then get very hot all of a sudden. If the hose and rad start warming up slowly right from the start the engine stat is bad.
