MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Front shocks

Is there a better solution than the tube shock front conversion? It appears that the tube shock conversion still uses the leaky armstrong shock. Does one drain all the oil out or live with the drips. Someone mentioned a place that rebuilds the armstrong shock so it performs better and does not leak. This sounds like the best solution, where was that? I'm open to ideas but don't want leaks and a quality fix.

Thanks, Leon

Leon,
I don't know what a tube shock absorber conversion is. However, in Australia we have strict rules about the alterations to existing suspension parts. As a result Nepean Classic Cars offer a gas shock absorber conversion leaving the orginal shock absorber in place. As this conversion adds to the car and leaves the existing shock absorber in place no engineering inspection is required. This sounds like the type conversion you are talking about. I beleive in this conversion they remove the internals of the shock aborber using it as a pivot for the top wishbone. Before doing this type of conversion, check with the suppliers of your kit as if your conversion requires the existing shock absorber to be used as mentioned above leaving the internals intact could result in uneven dampening of your front suspension which is very dangerous.

Hope this helps.

A number of companies offer both rebuilt or new Armstrong lever arms with 30% uprated valving - stronger spring. You can even do it yourself by removing the little spring loaded valve, desoldering the nut and tightening it up - thats how we used to do Minor 1000's anyway!
Unless the tube shock is mounted in such a way as to emulate a coil over type suspension it will in fact put stresses on the front suspension - for example the type that bolts onto the side of the wishbone.
Go with the uprated Armstrongs or all the way with something like the Hopkinson coil-over kit.

Leon,
if you check out the shock performance thread in the BBS archive the company in the USA for rebuilding Armstrong shocks appears to be World wide Auto in some where called Madison. The whole thread appears to be full of satisfied customers and the WWA description of the works carried out to each unit appears to be very sound.

Check out www.worldwideauto.com

That someplace called Madison happens to be the state capitol of the Wisconsin. Home of the University of Wisconsin and the fighting Badgers. Great school, great town, great state. Oh and yes, the guys at Worldwide do rebuild armstrong shocks and they are also great.

Regarding front shockers and suspension considerations..
Has anyone tried the Ron Hopkinson front handling kits?
I believe there is 2 kits you can buy
the second having Blistein shockers and realtered geometry on the suspension mounts etc and heavy duty springs

What id like to know has anyone used this kit and if its good
get me some details ie fax no/email etc so i can buy a pair

Thanks
