MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Grinding in neutral

So today im driving along fine, I slow down, put it in neutral and hear a grinding sound coming from the gearbox. Its in neutral, the clutch is not disengaged. Any ideas? I thought maybe a worn throwout bearing. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Jake

What gearbox?
Justin

From your description it sounds like bearing failure, most likely on the lay shaft. (Doesn't matter which tranny, they all have one) I doubt if the throw out bearing would make noise if the clutch was not disengaged. As the car was moving the other parts of the drive line were also turning, so check the U-joints as that might be the cause and a lot cheaper and easier to fix.

Thanks, the tranny is a GM T5. The noise went away when I put the clutch in which is why I suspect the throwout bearing (quartermaster HTOB). Only did it a few times, as if the distance from the pressure plate to the bearing surface had decreased allowing the turning pressure plate to occasionaly spin the bearing while in neutral. Or other times for that matter but neutral is the only time I would hear it with the loud exhaust.
Thanks for the input.
Jake

Dis-engaging the clutch would put a load on the throwout bearing and I would think the noise would increase. However the input shaft to the trans would stop turning and also the layshaft as it is driven by the input shaft. Either way, sounds like it's time to remove the trans and clutch and check it out.

So after sitting a few days, I drove the V8 for 15 miles or so and no grinding noise. So now I have no idea. I checked the fluid level and its right where it should be. Oh well, guess Ill just keep going.
Been 65 here all week, nice top off weather.
