MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Harry, VA - his view of British cars and Britain

"Britain's ability to survive independently as a world power is 100% dependent on the pleasure of the United States. Period.

"With respect to Tony Blair's oft-repeated recent quote, "I to-tal-ly support the United States," how has the UK shown that support? Did it supply the napkins? The history books will record that, to date, the UK have apparently sent over a single sub to launch a couple of cruise missiles. Hey, thanks ... you really mixed it up and helped out with the fight ... we are kneeling over our opponent ready to knock his lights out, and you reach in like Boy George and slap him once, tittering.

"Your posts make me, for one, truly embarrassed to be seen driving a British car today. You just don't get being respectful. The photo of Rudy Giuliani in that tribute should remind you of what it is like to have a leader with grit ... since Churchill your country seems to have quite forgotten. And please don't ask us to take seriously any country that lets people live in poverty while at the same time lavishly sponsoring that de-clawed royal family of nitwits.

"Please, snuggle up with your cuppas and those beastly things that too often pass for wives over there ... and definitely don't visit."
..

Morse, I'm comin to visit for one.
Nice cheap flights at the moment:-)

Even sailors and airmen know that the real job is on the ground - when the complete story is told you may have a different view - until then try tea and sympathy
we have to live with Blair

Of all the countries in the world--the Brits never fail to stand side by side with the US--to me that alone is worth it, whether they fire a one missle, a million missles, or nothing!
James Johanski

I'm with James on this one. Solidarity in the face of attack. Close ranks and move forwards. We'll need all the support we can get before this is over, military, or vocal. And sometimes vocal assent is all that matters.
Jim Blackwood

To use an American expression "we feel your pain" that's what Blair is saying. Our troops are there
ready to fight and die alongside your's,we in the UK
know what terrorism can be like when it can strike anywhere anytime,be it the IRA. or the Luftwaffe.
Stop driving a British car and use the appropriate
newsgroups to air your opinion. This BBS is for enthusiasts of MG cars.
KEVIN GILLESPIE

Harry VA,
your remarks are deeply offensive to decent people everywhere and an embarrasment to Americans. This Board is a most unsuitable forum to place them on.

I'm not surprised that you withold your name and email. I also would be ashamed to tell people who I was if I wrote this mindless kind of stuff.
Matty

From a small country of 20 mill people that just sent off 1500 troops to fight along side the yanks I find this quote disturbing.

I always thought it was the support that counted not how big the contribution was. You send what you can and when the hat comes round again you dig deeper.

Guys, let's not go overboard on this OK? For those of you who haven't looked at the MGB-General thread I'm going to repost here:

"Take it easy on Harry guys, all he did wrong was hit the submit button without looking at what he wrote one more time with an eye to who was going to read it and what they'd think. At least that's my opinion. And there's an element of truth in what he said even if he did go a bit overboard. You all know it, and that's why you made the posts you've made. And it *was* moving. All you have to do is look at the faces to know that. And to clearly understand Bush's resolve. It's closer than most of us ever want to be to ground zero. People get emotional to stuff like that, and Harry can be excused for it. As can anyone else whether from grief or embarrasment. It simply shows how close we become when threatened from the outside.

As for dropping food, that comes from our belief that not only are we all brothers and sisters in this country which is suddenly clear to all, but that we are brothers and sisters of all people anywhere in the world. We do not take pleasure in bombing the He** out of them, and would not do it if they hadn't forced us to it, and it disturbs us that they are hungry. So we try to help even as we try to eliminate the evil. I have no doubt they are as confused by it as anyone could be. But maybe the children will begin to understand that we are not the enemy. The one thing that we have going for us, is that we have, as a country and as a people, learned to be tolerant of different ways. This is a lesson the whole world should take to heart. It has made us a happy and prosperous country."

And I would suggest that you read the beginning posts in that thread then read Harry's post in an attempt to see it through his eyes. He's been a good and valuable contributor here and doesn't deserve to be alienated.
Jim Blackwood

Wait, why on earth would you guys transpose this fellow's comment from the "General" BBS to this one? It is the very definition of taking something out of context. Harry was, apparently, responding to some posts that mocked a tribute to WTC victims and the patriotic stirrings of a fellow in Florida. As they say, I may not agree with what the man has to say, but I will defend to the death his right to say it. I don't know where in Virginia Harry is from, but down here in NASCAR country, some of the comments made by the UK blokes in that thread would significantly shorten the utterers' life expectancies.
Bill Withum

Well Bill, I think that Harry has alienated himself by his own stupidity. His comments about the Brits are made out of ignorance but his attempt to insult them by reference to British women is a repulsive act of cowardice. You are right, he has made valuable contributions but he should stick to what he is good at - and politics, diplomacy and honourable exhange of views is definitely not what he is good at.
Steve

Out of context or not, many of Harry's remarks are offensive and juvinile, and uncalled for on this or any civil forum. I'm embarressed for anyone tht would post that message amongst a group of people that enjoy things British . It only serves to enflame. This isn't a political forum.
Gordon

Harry's comments about British women, sounds just like my Mother when she is trying to make a point that carries little weight, by following it up with a totally unrelated topic, which is supposed to prove the original point.

What Harry fails to realize it is not necessarily the initial contribution that shows your commitment, but the position making that contribution leaves you in.
Nick Smallwood

<< but the position making that contribution leaves you in. >>

Well said Nick - but some people will never get their brain round that.

If, or is that when, there is more terrorist action, no prises for guessing who's next. Friends of the USA.

Whilst there are many Americans who think as Steve, LA does (see above), USA will have friends elsewhere in the world. Everyone needs friends. History shows those who go it alone rarely survive ....... it's just a matter of time.

If you all ignore this thread, it will die. I hope.

I don't know where Harry is getting his information. Harry should watch C-Span when Tony Blair is before the House of Commons. Our UK allies have flown airstrikes from their aircraft carrier over there and their commandos have done some ground ops (Well Done, my Brothers!).
The Germans are airlifting stuff around parts unknown to help us. Others are doing the same. Many of their combat aircraft left their bases days ago and their whereabouts are unreported. Their GSG-9 Unit has dropped completely out of sight and even their families don't know where they are.
Several countries are allowing us to set down enroute to refuel and perform maintenance. There's a lot going on that's really low-key. No real publicity so the only way to find out is to know where to look. A lot of the activity is secret. This whole thing is almost like a Tom Clancy novel.
Naturally, our US media is being myopic and saying little about how our allies are helping. Too bad!
Steve S.

<< Naturally, our US media is being myopic and saying little about how our allies are helping. Too bad! >>

Why do they do that Steve S.? Rarely give credit when it's due. Also, how come the Yankees play the Mets and it's the World Series or summat? Dont they know there's a whole big wide world outside the USA? ..... :o)) Always puzzled me that stuff. Still, you've got Formula 1 back stateside - good thing too!
John McFeely

I hear that the US has requested and the British have agreed to send the entire complement of SAS over to Afghanistan.

I suppose that Harry will say that they are only too glad to get away from "those beastly things that too often pass for wives over there ..." but of course they'll miss their "cuppas", won't they Harry?

Harry, why don't you email the Regiment over in Hereford and tell them directly. You could also leave them your full name and address for a reply.
Ricky

John-
Why? Well, as much as we Yanks hate to admit it, we're a tad provencial in our thinking. For example, many people in the New York Metropolitan area seem to believe that if you go west of the Hudson river, they're in the wilderness. It's easy to spot a NYC car out on the highways when they're outside of their native area. Not by the Statue of Liberty on their license plates. They're the ones driving faster than anybody else on the road! They seem to think that they've left civilization and there's no police. Then there's the fact that the USA is the sole remaining superpower. This makes Americans think that the USA is doing everything all by itself and that the other countries of the world are content to let the USA shoulder the burdens of international affairs while they party away. Of course, this is a rediculous presumption. A great many countries are doing what they can to help. Some are helping in ways that don't make stimulating viewing on the television screen, so it doesn't make the 6 o'clock news and Americans remain ignorant of their activities. I've been staying on top of what our allies are doing to help, and I personally find it very moving. This is going to be a long, long war and this is the first time that I've ever seen the world united behind a cause that entails the destruction of evil. Now I know what our Father's generation felt in their struggle against the Nazis. It makes me feel good. Like, maybe their's hope for mankind. To those who are watching closely, it's obvious that this isn't a war of the USA against an enemy of our nation, this is a war of mankind against an evil that threatens to push us all into a new Dark Age. To our allies, the people of the world, I say "Thanks". God bless us all.
Steve S.

>>>Naturally, our US media is being myopic and saying little about how our allies are helping. Too bad!<<<

All the media says too much and the guys in the field are put at greater risk than need be for their big mouths and appetite for pictures.

I have a very close personal knowledge of the effects of terrorism, being showered by debris and damaging my ears from one IRA bomb in the early 1970's. (What was worse wasn't the worry of that device, as it had gone off, but potentially others hidden to blow you up when you move away from the first!) I can therefore appreciate clearly why so many are genuinely worried. (This was my first of total of 10 active bomb incidents I attended in my 30 years Police service.)

In the meantime lets do our own bit by getting back to the subject of the title of the BBS, and showing how we are not moved by acts of terrorism.
