MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Holley fuel pump question ...

Having burned out two Mallorys seriatim, I'm going to try a Holley pump. Larry, I know you recommend the Holley Blue, but it puts out so much more pressure than I need (even though I'll use a regulator) that I'm just gonna go with a Red. My question: the way my car is plumbed, it wants to have the pump set up so that gas comes in the front and out the back, at least with the pump hanging off the RHS of the battery box. On the Mallorys, you just loosen the base and swivel it to whatever direction's best. Is this also possible on the Holleys? ... if not, I have to think up plan B.

What year car do you have?? I have a 78 and the pump dropped right into the stock hole in the trunk?? The holleys come with a bracket that is adjustable. the fuel will go in one side of the back and out the other, nothing is adjustable other than the pump in the bracket..?? That answer your question?

I liked the blue because it came with a good regulator, so you can bring that pressure down to where you need it and never worry about running out of fuel..

It has been a few years since I messed with one, but the only difference between the blue and red are internal spring pressure and regular. Both are really good pumps that will last you for a long while.

I'm using a red holley in a '78 gt, but it has to be mounted vertically, so it wouldn't fit into the original su position. It works well but is a bit noisy. I suggest you use plenty of insulation between the pump & the mounting metal. Exhaust pipe mounts are good are good for this purpose. Barrie E

The Holley Red pump is a good choice, but the Blue is WAAAY overkill for most of us. I have one on my 400 hp '68 Camaro. It is noisier than the dual 3 inch Flowmasters!

I use a Carter on my MG. It's a bit noisy, too. Anyone found an electric pump that's quiet, like the stock SU?
Carl

Dang that Holley's loud, even though it's soft-mounted on rubber bushings. At least ya know if it's workin'! But it doesn't really matter; when the motor fires you can't hear it.

The Mallory is way quieter but it's not like I'm recommending it or anything because as noted above, twice now the one I was using (Series 70) got _really_ quiet and that's totally unhelpful as far as forward motion and of course a monumental pain in the neck when the thing quits at the bottom of a hill as mine did. Loud is infinitely better than silent.

If you can hear your fuelpump..your car is definitely too quiet1!! ;)

David,

Were you running a return-style regulator?

Carl, that's funny, I have gotten to know Sam at Century Performance pretty well over the last couple of years. He knows his stuff for sure. For a ~260 cid motor putting out 250 or so bhp, Sam didn't think it was worth putting in a return line. However, just in case I change my mind, when I replaced the gas tank this winter I had a bung soldered in to accept a return line. The Holley clearly just rules ... it's great! In any event, after a bunch of soul-searching and bean-counting, I decided to sell the car ... see other thread!
