MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Identifying oil pump inlets

Hello again,

I know this will be a bit of a stupid question once I know the answer.

I'm trying to work out what the various inlet/outlet bits on a flotec type oil pump base do. This replaces the standard oil pump cover on a Rover V8.

The main inlet/outlet oil pipes on go on the two larger open unions at the top - is that right and which is the inlet and which is the outlet?

Does the smaller union on the unit front take the oil pressure gauge? Do I unscrew it and screw in the electrical one from my V8? or do I connect a new direct pressure gauge to it as it is?

The two outlets on the left hand side (one large one small) - are they meant to remain blanked off? One of them is a pressure relief valve - is that correct?

If it helps I can post a photo somewhere on line, but I'm hoping as you all have put these/similar on your own engines you know what I am talking about.

Thanks for any help.
Liam

The after pipe connects to the filter outlet - that is to say the loup is from the forard connection, through the oil cooler to the forard connection on the oil filter and back to the pump.

You have rightly worked out that the pressure guage union is further down the plate. The GTV8 had a direct line back to the meter. I believe the RV8 dispensed with a pressure guage and had the usual warning light.

Thanks Roger, do you know if the oil pressure port will take the standard screw in electrical sensor from my SD1 V8 ? Or should I go down the route of getting a direct pressure sensor - its going into an MGB eventually.

I was going to use an existing chromer bumper B shell that I have which has already been converted to take a V8, but have changed my mind. Shame because I liked the dual water/oil gauge.

I'm just going to scrap it and see if I can use the rubber bumper one I have instead (thank heavens my father in law is a welder). That might end up getting scrapped too if I don't have the stomach for the bodywork.

Best regards.
Liam

hi Liam,
why cannot you use the MG dual gauge, is it a fitting isssue or a lenths of the pipe?

You can do either but if you are not going for a direct question - talk to your land rover people about pressure sensor connections - there is more than one option if you want to go electric. I have stayed direct because it was OE (and I am lazy).

Thanks Roger and Tony. I had simply assumed that the two dashboards and instruments would not be interchangeable. Although I have got a chrome and rubber bumper model standing next to each other I had not compared them. I was focussing more on which body panels I could send from the chrome to the rubber.

Would the dash be a simple swap over, I would have thought there would have been some significant mods involved?
