MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - IRS for MGBs

Greeting All,
I was looking through a MG World Mag (proably one a few months old since I live in Oz) the other day and noticed an add for a IRS conversion for a MGB. This is not the conversion article from a year or so ago but and add from a company offering a kit to convert standard MGB to IRS with no body mods. Does anyone know anything about this kit? Can it be used with V8 Conversions? And how much work is it?

What is an IRS conversion?

I think you are talking about the NTG kit Clem. I am told by those who have seen it at shows that it is a very neat installation.

IRS stands for independent rear suspension...ie: Jaguar or Corvette where the diff is hard mounted to the chassis and the axle shafts are not. Usually uses a lower link and an upper link

Trevor Taylor Suspension? (IRS)
(Bill Guzman has some information.)

I am looking for an IRS setup for my project. So far I came up with one made by Heidt that uses a Ford 9" aluminum centersection with Wilwood brakes, shortened to custom specs, etc. for $4000 (body/frame has to be modified to fit since this is mostly a hot-rod type of add-on) The Jag/corvette do not use an upper link that I am aware of, just a lower link, coil-over shocks, (or an elleptical spring), and the U-jointed half shafts, (which acts kind of like an upper link). The Corvette does have lateral locating bars called Torque-links?

IRS has the advantage in that one wheel acts independently of the other, and less unsprung weight not to mention adjustability. Disadvantages are the expense and more things to break or loosen up.

The Trevor Taylor IRS kit is a bolt on kit which uses Ford Sierra bits. The mag you read tested this kit with a V8MGB so it can cope with V8 power, and it was a very clean install with very little mods to be done
The kit isnt cheap though, i estimate around $6k Australian dollars.. And imagine if something broke..
where in Australia are we going to find a Ford Sierra?

Better luck trying to adapt a Jag IRS or better yet a Holden Commodore system
Clem since youre in the RAAF, maybe you can get some of the engineers to do some work for you,my brother in law works at British Aerospace here at the RAAF base and has heard of some RAAF guys base who are modyfing a Sunbeam Tiger!!!

Good luck
