MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - is 2 better than 1

Is a twin exhaust system better (more efficient)than a single system. My v8 system needs replacing, the present system has each bank running separatley then joining just in front of the rear axle then exiting as a single system in the original position-i wonder if this system configuration has any benefits, or should the two banks be joined as soon as possible?

John,

Good reading on systems

This is a twin which does not need threading the exhaust past Fuel Tank and an X could be used

Frank's exhaust is VERY noisy, I understand that he has replaced it late last year, you need to speak to him on the subject really.

I run a through-the-wings stainless single pipe single silencer system which I got from MG Bhive, there was a little problem fitting, but it is excellent value, quiet at cruising speeds, and quite growly when accelerating, and I would strongly recommend this system to anyone.

I asked Peter Burgess this question at last Silverstone event. He reckoned a good single was possibly more efficient than a twin. But a twin just sounds soooo good.

John,
I suspect the real advantage lies in the design and execution rather than any benefits gained from the type itself.

The early joined system has the advantage of being somewhat lighter and being easier to fit since it has to be done one side only.

Paul: Great site, Thanks for that.

Cheers, Pete.

Mike,

The link is to Perry's exhaust not concorde!

It is the pulse from Y or X connector, have a read of site. With Twin you need to balance to maximise.
I've gone out of inner wing now with Y to single silencer.

I've heard that about balancing before, but the MGOC own twin system is not balanced at all - entirely separate pipes right back.

Mike,

I had mine made up so you can either Y which I had as existing tail was SS, or I assume X and use Perry's type system if you have enough ground clearance.

A good site that Paul cheers.

John,

My system was indeed pretty noisy. Liked it though, but it got tiring. Replaced backboxes: the silencing material was blown out and the inner tubes rotted away. Now full ss and lifetime guaranteed dampening material. Sometimes I am thinking about returning to a completely original setup. It would suit the car well, but the Twin Sound is very nice.
Now it is more mellow. If you want more info, let me know.

I made my system originally about 10 years ago, so it hasn't done too badly..
It consisted of block hugger manifolds (can't remember whcih make they were)which were a real pain to fit, in that they didn't line up squarely with the port face and they exited into a highly restictive 40mm collector. I cut and welded them to make them fit and increased the collector size to 50mm-but they aways leaked a bit at the block face...
The rest of the system consisted of two turbo mufflers-one for each bank, and a sigle large bore peco type straight through muffler at the rear and it produced a lovely muted sound not obtrusive, but just right in my opinion..
But now i think i will buy something off the shelf which i hope will be far less work than making my own again..providing it fits...

John, how did you go about with the fuel tank? My system uses a custom made tank. Wonder what you did? The r/h exhaust also uses an different mounting point. Else look at the pictures on http://home.zonnet.nl/f_de_groot/, in the exhaust section.

I'm right in exhaust installation at the moment...we centered my gas tank & moved all the wiring/plumbing from under the car...the right side exhaust now runs in a mirror image to the original left side & has plenty of room
