MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - is there a 1280mm wide rear end?

Guys, I'm back finishing the MGA V8 after a harrowing fight with the ex who wanted it crushed as part of the divorce!!! So now I have decided on another unusual mod to the car...I plan on widening the chasis/body by 30mm! Don't ask why, its partly to allow for a mgb rack at the front and the fitting of a full wrap around screen (Jag D Type). This now means I can now increase the rear track by 30mm above the existing current MGB 1251mm! So, is there a 3:01 to 3:5 rear end out there with a track of about 1280mm? What about the volvo range (dont forget I'm in Australia where USA cars are very rare)? Over to you guys and your comments...
regards

Mark,

I've got a Nissan Skyline Silhouette rear end in my '79 Roadster. It is 1260mm centre to centre however it was cut and shut to fit the 'B' body but I'm not sure what width it started at.......you might want to check them out. It has a few pluses those being, 28 spline, limited slip and disc brakes. And it being an Aussie Borg Warner you also have the option of several ratios (mine is 3.7:1) I give it a pretty hard time at sprints, hillclimbs and motorkhanas and it hasn't missed a beat yet.

1260mm wide rear end = your girlfriend.

I believe that would probably be the ex-wife...one of the reasons for a new, improved girlfriend!

Jonesy is probably so accustomed to his girl/wife's fat 1280mm a$$ that he thinks all ours have the same; that or else he's accustomed to Bubba's!

Mark,

I responded to your thread earlier but don't know where the hell my comments went. Oh well, here it is again.

The reason for using the Nissan rear is that it is cost effective. The axle has the centre offset and you only have to shorten one side of the housing and axle to make it almost identical to the original MGB steel wheel width.

I am using an ED V8 Falcon Borg Warner 3.27:1 28 spline LSD but with drum brakes.

Commodores, Falcons and Nissans all use Borg Warner 28 spline diffs, the only differences being the ratios and the Nissan one the only that is offset.

Words of caution are:

1. Commodore ratios are the only ones with 3.08:1 (and a tousand dollars for a good one!)

2. Falcon ratios are 2.77:1 and 3.27:1 (Note!! You can't change the gear set on the 2.77:1!! Cost is around $400 for both of these for a good one)

3. Falcon ratios also have 2.92:1 and 3.23:1 which sound the better option, but these are the 25 spline weaker axles.

4. Not all 28 spline axles are LSD.

5. Any reference to 31 spline is a nine inch diff.

Hope this helps,

Stainzy
