MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - MGB Heater mods or Custom

Has anyone modified an MGB heater syetem or upgraded by replacing with one from modern car to get better windscreen demist and heating?
HC Ryan

Back when my car had a heater in it, it absolutely roasted me. Make sure your core is in good condition, your coolant passages are clear, and the blower motor is functioning properly.

I get air coming out of mine at 140F with an ambient of 50F and like Justin mine roasts my feet and if I turn on the demister in the GT as soon as mist appears it vanishes in seconds. True, if you let it get to beads of condensation on the glass it takes a while to clear although driving with a 1/4-light open a smidgen clears all the glass quite quickly, and if stuck in traffic on a cold wet night then it will build up on the sides despite the blower. But other than that a properly working system isn't that bad, although it will never be as good as a modern car. There are uprated matrixes and fan motor and blades about, some have said the matrix is worth it, but not the fan.

There are nine different aspect to the heating system any one or more of which can contribute to poor output, see http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/wn_heaterframe.htm

Your stock core should still do the trick. The only change I made to my heater box was to replace the fan motor with one out of a newer Range Rover. There are lots of fan motors that can be made to fit. My heater literally will burn my feet; even when it was 25 deg. F outside. Jim Stuart made some serious mods to his Heating/AC, he has a website.

I've read on this site that many of the aftermarket heater control valves restrict flow to about 30% because they don't open as they should - you might want to look into that.

There has been a lot of talk about that, and Bob Munch has a web page (http://members.aol.com/bobmunch/HTRVlsHT.htm) that describes a mod. But that is to repro valves, my three OE valves don't seem to have the problem, and in fact the mod, if done to an OE valve, removes the fine control of the valve near the closed end making it difficult to get 'warm' air. I get the same heat output as Bob's 'after' results, with an ambient of 50F instead of 74F.
