MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Nitrous

Has anyone experience of using nitrous with a BV8? Is it a practical proposition for a road car or is it best left to the drag strip?

David:

The problem with nitrous is that it is addictive. Like all addictive substances, you will soon devote too much of your time and resources to procure it. At this point you will either wake-up to the sad case you have become, reform, and abandon the time and money spent, or, you will be unrepentant and carry on to the inevitable conclusion.

On a more serious note. While I have no experience with the good gas as pertains to a 215, I am a fan of it for the track: you can have a mild mannered street car, with an extra 100 ponies in the bottle. All this at no great cost to engine durability or reliability. Most kits are well developed by now. At first you will be going through a lot of gas (and $$$$) just for the sheer kick in the pants. Your wallet will soon dictate when it is really neccessary to let the genie out of the bottle ;)

I have no idea what the laws are over there, but in some places here it is illegal to use nitrous on the road.

I have/am toying long term with having NOS available in my car for trips to the track. I have a 302, so the set-up and parts are readily available. One thing to keep in mind however is getting that power to the road. a "stock" bodied B can only handle about 195/205 size tires. even with 200hp from a std BOP/Rover you can break thos eloos all day long. While the NOS will give you more power, it may not be usable as it is all up and above the power your drivetrain can put to the road..

BUT, that's does not mean I might not try it myself, just keep that in mind before dupming the $$ into a NOS kit and realizing you can't use the power..

Thanks guys, I suppose it's just natural progression in the quest for ever more horses before the transmission finally goes bang. More expense, more heartache etc. etc.. I'll stick with the usual engine upgrades.
But those kits do look awfully simple and I could just use the 50bhp jet and maybe the 100bhp for special occasions and as for the 150bhp.........

Nitrous is neet, but I'd rather be blown :O

I gotta agree superchargers more up front cost but lower overall usage than nitrous

Hey, this is an aluminium block we are talkin about. It, unlike cast iron blocks and specially designed aluminum big blocks and small blocks, I dont think this motor can handle the stresses that the high revs of a nitro motor does.

It'd sure be fun to try it. I can see where pushing the "GO" button instead of downshifting could be handy.

I am no expert at NOS, but like you guys have looked at it with dreamfilled eyes and talked to some mustang guys that run it...

If you go NOS, please make sure it is "right", use a purge valve, a WOT trigger, arming switch and low fuel pressure sensor. The WOT only triggers the silly gas under Wide Open throttle, the purge valve lets you get the air out of the system so you get usefull nitrous when opened, arming switch is obvious no need to run NOS 100% of time, the fuel press guage makes sure you have sufficient fuel pressure to keep up witht he nitrous, otherwise the engine will go super lean which is BAADDD.. Carb kits are easy to come by, plan on adding about 1/2" to the overall height of your air cleaner as you will install a plate between the carb and intake. Pick up a Summitracing catalog (www.summitracing.com), they have gobs of kits and accessories.
