MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - No Oil Pressure - Help!

Car was running fine an hour ago. I decided to change pressure relief valve in oil pump base. When it was done there was no oil pressure on start up. Thought it must be a faulty valve so put old one back in and still no oil pressure. Engine is warm and pressure relief valve is fitted correct way and with the spring. Engine is now sounding very noisey. Help please!
Bob

I know it’s an obvious solution, but did you re-prime the oil pump? And did the pressure come up then?

Bruce

Bob . . . you can pack the gear cavity with Petroleum Jelly before you reassemble the pump cover and it will usually self prime. Suggest you change the oil and filter after running the engine for a short time.

The easiest way that I have found to prime the oil pump is to disconnect the feed line from the pump to the oil filter and to fill it with a heavy grade oil. This will take a few minutes to drain down through the pipe and get to the oil pump itself. By the way, when you turn the motor over, take the spark plugs out, disconnect a low tension wire on the coil, and then spin the motor over. It'll spin nice and fast without the stress of actually starting it. Good Luck.

I presume I am correct in that the feed line is the one with the oil cooler in it. That is oil flows from pump through oil cooler to filter then from filter to oil pump.
Bob

Sorry guys I've left it so long but I haven't forgotten you. A big thank you to you all. Obviously all the oil had ran out of the pump and it needed re priming. Lets hope no long term damage was done running it for the short periods with no oil pressure.
