MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Rover 5 speed gearbox

I am about to overhaul my rover 5 speed gearbox. It is a secondhand unit so I have no idea on its condition. Is there anyone out there with a drawing and any other information I would require to rebuild this box (never done one before but there has got to be a first time for everything). Where is the best place to but spares( preferably in Britain)? Can I use spares out of the rangerover gearbox? what is the best book to buy for this gearbox.
Thanks in advance Mick Black

There is actually an overhall kit available for this box, consisting of all gaskets bearings, shims, sync.cones etc, have seen them advertised in Land Rover Owner International mag.But i'm sure most Rover specialists will be able to point you in the right direction.
Incidently there is always a good selection of Rover V8 specialists adverting in all of the Landrover type mags..

i also overhauled my SD1 box with help of the Haynes and the Rover workshop manual. Its really straight forward and no special tooling is required. The only difficult thing was adjusting the preload on the bearings of the main sfaft and the secondary shaft. This is a precise and time consuming thing and you need a gauge for that. This had to be done while i had to replace a shaft due to to pitting on one of the gears.Adjustment of the preload is done by shims of a certain thickness. Maybe if the original shaft are not replaced this is not necesarry. I also replaced the single gear of the reverse because this was heavely pitted too.
Another thing you have to look at is when you assemble the box, that the square shaft of the oil pump go's into the oil pump gear. This gear is made of a kind of plastic and is easily damaged. I broke mine.
I bought my kit with Adrian Bailey in the UK.

Mick,
Pleased to see you have started the conversion, mine is still not finished but I am about 90% there.
I bought an overhaul kit for my SD1 box from John Webb at Autogear (Transmissions) Limited, 254 High Street, Canvey Island, Essex, SS8 7SY. Tel: 01268 681608. Fax: 01268 681008
John will need to know the suffix letter from the box serial number so you get the correct bearings. The kit contains everthing you need, including syncro hubs, bearings, seals and gaskets. As Peter said the job is straight forward useing a Haynes Rover SD1 manual.
