MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - SD1 rear end

Hi,
Can anyone out there recommend a UK company that will modify a SD1 rear axle to fit MGA (V8 powered) and also give me an idea of the cost.
I've looked in the archive section and it only came up with A1 Fabrications near Salisbury, who do not seem to exist anymore.

Thanks

Chris Bond.

Chris,

I had one done by them, but as you say, they appear to have gone.

I was not happy with the conversion, and ended up with very expensive uprated half shafts from Canada, as the Vitesse ones twisted with the torque.

Unless you are going for lots of power, I would suggest using the MGBV8GT axle, next time I would go for the Hoyle IRS setup, I guess it cost me nearly as much as that to get the Rover axle right !

Thanks for that Michael,

I have been talking to John Hoyle and intend to use his front end. Like you I like the look of his IRS but initially felt it was beyond my budget.

I've been quoted about £750 for a rebuilt MGB rear with the 3.07 gears, is that about right or are there hidden costs?

Chris.

PS what sort of horsepower were you pulling to twist the Rover shafts?

Chris,

The SD1 conversion was done on mass to keep cost down but none of these companies are still alive.

Andy could do work and can arrange for Strange halfshafts at appox £400+

The cheapest way is to stick with OE parts.

MGOC sell the rear axle for V8 conversion at about that price.

The Hoyle has added consideraton of rear discs and LSD to balance budget but still not cheap.

MGB Hive sell a V8 axle without half shafts for about £500.

CJ,Nick Butler(Richmond area)narrows SDI axles,sorry no contact numbers.
I would not bother with the mgb axle,I have my broken planet gears and shaft hanging on my garage wall, with the chromed diff cover that looks like it has been opened like a tin can!
I got an 8" Ford axle from Curries in the USA,and got the diff in the UK,the housing and axles are light for shipping.

Chris,

As Paul says, Andy Robinson is probably your man if you intend to use the SD1 Axle, he sold me the half-shafts. It wasn't the HP, it was the enormous torque ( we retimed the camshaft for bottom end torque when the engine was rebuilt, I guess that did it)
