MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - SD1 vs P6 valve covers ... baffles??

For the Rover V8, the SD1-type valve covers, which I don't think are too attractive, have an internal baffle, meaning some sort of inner sheet metal that seems to protect the breather outlet from oil spray. Because I think they look great, I was going to just use a pair of the P6 covers on my motor (3.9L; 4-bbl carb) ... the breather pipes are perfectly situated, but those baffles are absent. Does this mean that the PCV system will suck oil spray out of the covers, and cause the motor to burn oil?
Sam

Sam,

I fitted P6 valve covers on my SD1 engine about 3 years ago and my engine doesn't burn oil.
I agree with you that the P6 covers look much better.

Hi

My engine is from a P6B. It has some baffling bolted to the rocker pedestals. I imagine you could get hold of some of these. (Or make them - it's just some bent steel.)

Guys, thanks ... another query, though: on most if not all carb'd V8 conversions I've seen, the PCV valve sucks from the port valve cover, and the starboard valve cover is connected to the underside of the air cleaner. Any reason why this can't be reversed? ... the way the P6 covers are configured, it would be a lot easier to do it this way. I mean, pulling suction on the crankcase can be done either way, no? Sorry if this is an ignorant question.
Sam

Sam,
I can't think of any reason why the flow can't be reversed, but maybe someone else can. I'm not familiar with the Rover V8, but have to assume it's much like my GM predecessor, and I never saw anything internally that would keep a person from doing this.

No reason why they can't be reveresed I would say, since the factory setup had both covers ported to the carbs and a restricted inlet on the back of the engine. Can't recall any baffles on my factory V8 covers, and it uses very little oil.
