MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - SD1 wheels on MGB?

I bought a 1980 SD1 this weekend. The alloy wheels are in good condition and I would love to put them on the B. As I will be deleting the wire wheels on the B anyway, can this be done?

Dana,

The SD1 parts I've used are Five bolt wheras B is Four Bolt, so you will need to have Hubs changed.

I understand the SD1 has 5 lug bolt pattern and the MGB has 4. I was hoping someone might know if there is a hub that will accept the SD1 wheels and fit on the B. Perhaps off the MGC?

MGC is a 5 lug pattern on a 4 3/4 inch diameter circle. Don't know what the pattern diameter is for the SD1. If you happen to come across a spare set of MGC lug type rear hubs I am looking a set as I am in the process of converting my C from wires to alloys.

Dana,

Usually SD1 Rear hubs are changed to 4 Bolt but I see no reason to go the other way, although the B rear Hubs are smaller than SD1 and you would need to check PCD. Andy Robinson Racing could do the work but he's in Basingstoke. Aprox cost £100-£200. Another way would be to have a one off Hub made up but cost about £500 from Quaiffe.

Dana,

I would think the cheapest thing to do would be to have a machine shop custom drill new lug holes for you in your existing hubs. the old holes can be filled with weld.

I have never personally done this, but it seems like it would work (anyone is welcome to set me straight, of course! :-)

BTW, we should chat...you're a stone's throw away from me; I live and work in Providence!

Joe, your idea about drilling holes in the hubs was suggested to me by my mechanic recently. I have plenty of time to think about it because this project has a long way to go. By the time I am ready to put wheels on, I may just get brand spanky new ones.

To sort out the back end, you could have the Rover SD1 axle shortened to fit. I believe a few companies in the UK are set-up for this modification.

The V8 SD1 is stronger than the MG V8 axle and has the same ratio 3.07/1. You could then sell the MG axle and probably have some change left after paying the engineer.

Have you looked into whether the front MG stub-axles can be modified to accept the SD1 hubs. The SD1 brakes calipers have the same centre/centre as the MG, so they will fit also.

Nick,
I've twisted shortened SD1 halfshafts, so probably not as strong as standard B. I'm interested to see if the supersports twists the B halfshafts. It is also expensive to cut and respline, and I've found it as cheap to have custom made shafts from US. B halfshafts can be uprated easily in the UK for about £400.

Dana you will also need rear drums drilled, although I use SD1 rear brakes and Drums changed to 4 Bolt.
