MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Single big electric fan???

Is there a downside to converting to a big electric puller fan behind the rad? I have an engine-driven flex fan, in a cowl, behind the rad, and the two yellow electric pusher fans in front. The car runs very warm at low speeds and if I forget to click the electric pusher fans on it gets really, really hot (of course I could add a thermostatic switch but that will further Mickey Mouse the setup).

Now I'm thinking, why not lose this Rube Goldberg 3-fan setup and just put a single big honkin' electric puller fan behind the rad? Haven't measured it, but you could probably even get a 14-incher pulling around 1400+ cfm on there. Seems to me this will work much better at low speed because the fan will still be going full speed. Is there any reason this would not be a good idea (other than, of course, that if the elec. fan fails your goose is cooked)?

How do you get the hot air out Steve you can blow all you want but the stuff has to go somewhere!
I was reading that Kenlowe (a UK aftermarket electric fan maker)have developed some much more efficient fan blades. The standard small electric fans are ok but expensive if they go wrong. I might try as big a Kenlowe in front of the rad as will fit and see how it goes. The other thing Imm going to do is fit a SS wire-mesh grill - like the MGOC Supersports.

I've been running a single 16 inch fan between the pump and radiator. I have never ever had overheating problems with it, even in our 100+ temp Summers. It is turned on by a sensor on the radiator and a backup sensor on intake. I have the rad sensor come on at 200F off at 180. The backup sensor turns on at 215-220. (I bought the adjustable sensor / relay at PepBoys). The fan does a great job cooling the engine quickly. Before this I had rigged a couple of 10 inch fans- while they worked fine, they constantly cycled on and off trying to cool my 4.6L. I have through fender exhaust. Good luck.

I am using a 16 inch puller fan made by Spal. It is rated at 2370 CFM, its a litte noisy but boy does it pull a lot of air! I am also using an adjustable thermostat switch in the radiator, with it set to turn on the fan at 195 degrees F. I also have RV8 exhaust. this set up is working well for me. No over heating
problems!

like Bill J I,m using a 16" spal fan, was given a 16"
puller fan but didn't have room to mount that way so mounted as a pusher where the hub of the motor fit under the slam panel and above the frame, it seemed to be doing the job, so I bought a proper pusher Spal pusher, the fan pokes a little over the top of my rad so it also blows some air to the carb air intake

I have been using a 16" puller rated at 2700 cfm for about 4 years now. I cools a 4.2 with block huggers & air conditioning, but I do use a 10" pusher when the A/C is on. Most of the time, the 16" does not come on if the car is moving over 40 mph. It is on an adjustable themostat set around 200 degrees F. The 10" runs all the time the air is on.

Wow, Jim. Do you have anything special rigged up like hood vents/louvers, or holes cut in the inner wings? What the heck do ya do with all that hot air?? Those 4.2s are sweet. You don't see tons of cars with 'em.
