MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - T-5 questions

ok heres the problem. i purchased a transmission froma 94 camaro that was reportedly behind a 3.4 v6. it arrived today and lo and behold, the bolt pattern to mate to the bellhousing was not the standard GM one but was the mustang one. the input shaft also is a 26 spline whereas i thought all v6's were 14. the ratios also seem to be really wide, i thought they would be the standard 2.95, 1.94 .... etc. but first seems more like 3.9 something. can anyone help me figure this out? did the 94 camaro use the ford bolt pattern? i guess the only good thing is that its a world class gearbox....

Jake, Your right Camaro used a different bolt pattern in I think 93 or 94 thru 97. I used a 94 V8 trans for the better ratios. It does seem to be the mustang pattern. You need to get a 94 bellhousing. The 94 V6 disc is 9 3/4" dia. x 1 1/8" 26 tooth spline. The spline is the same as most V8 splines. Are you puting this behind a 6 or 8 cyl. The disks and pressure plates are available for both. I used it with a 2.8 engine and used a 94 S10 disc for a 2.2 liter gas powered truck that is 9 1/8" the same as the 2.8 Camaro clutch. Good luck,

thanks, anyone know if there are adapters out there to mate the ford bolt pattern to a GM 4 speed pattern? i have the buick 4 speed bellhousing that i want to retain. anyone know what the gear stock gear ratios for this transmission should be?

Jake
Go to www.classicconversionseng.com Bill has a breakdown of T-5 gearing.

thanks, looks like mine is one of those wide ratio gearboxes, but at least its a world class one. anyone wanna buy one?

Jake,
By the Buick bellhousing, I assume you are using one of the BOP/R V8 motors.

GM T5 Five speed from 1993 and newer have that Ford bolt pattern that is generally only used with 1993 or newer bell housings, thus yours will not fit unless you drill it out.

Do not even consider using a Mustang bell housing or something along those lines and adapting it to your motor... (OK, you may want to double check this, but...) I believe that Ford T5 input shafts are longer and so is the bell housing, thus the Ford bellhousing with the GM gearbox will not allow the input shaft to reach the back of the motor

The gear ratios on the F-body (Camaro/Firebird) V6 T5 are as follows-
1st: 3.76
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.72

The V8 Camaro/Firebirds gear ratios are-

1st: 2.98
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.68 (some are 0.63- depending on who you talk to)

From personal experience: This gearbox is a nice feeling box, shifts nice and works wonderful, behind a 3.4L V6 (more power then the stock 4bbl 215!) but was too low geared in all gears but quite extensively in 1st and 5th. The V8 box is closer geared and would be more appropriate for the BOP/R which does not have the extensive RPM range to run in like the six. You will find, just like anyone else running a V6 or V8 F-body T5 that you will want to change out your differential.

I have used several of these and keep one in stock just for sample, if you have any other questions, as everyone here... There is bound to be someone who knows. :-) If you need further tech on this particular unit and I do not respond (haven't been checking the BBS for a while :-O )
You can alway email me and I will be glad to respond personally or here on the board for everyone to learn.
You could always get a V6. (silent snickering in the background)
Good luck,

Oh, BTW, to convert that box to cable drive is very easy... If you use that box, leave the question on this BBS and a bunch of people should be able to respond to that as well.

thanks for all the help. i guess i could keep the box for now and change it out later...if i do keep the box, can i just change the front casing to an earlier one with the correct bolt pattern? ive done transmissons before so i dont think ill have trouble, just need to know if i can do it, and which casing i can use. ive heard that the NWC trans casings wont work with WC gearing. my other option would be to fab an adapter that would accomodate both bolt patterns. i have access to a CNC 3 axis mill as well as experience with a great CAD program so its entirely possible...
