MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - T5 help me decide which one...

94/95 -- seems to be the answer due to length & position of shift fork cut out, but was told there's no provision for mechanical speedo -- is that true? if so, means i'd need new guages or my speedo (which would have to be after market electronic) wouldn't match. is it true that the 94/95 t5 doesn't have a mechanical speedo connection? Is there another way to hook up a mechanical speedo if it is true?

Hi Rob, You can still use a mechanical speedo - the impulse generator just goes into the same housing on the T-5 as the mechanical pickup would have previously. Still uses a nylon drive gear etc. D&D make up complete cables with appropriate ends for the MG speedo and the T-5. They need to know your gearing, wheel size, speedo turns/mile and so on but it should not be a problem. Bob.

awesome, thanks Bob... that's what i needed to know. I found a 94/95 with the bell housing & really like the idea of being able to use an external slave vs. a HTOB.

For anyone who's looking for an 85+ T5 there's an '88 on ebay that says its rebuilt... seller told me he has the bell & shifter fork & would include it (you'd want to ask him & get him to tell you the same thing to be sure)... anyway, it's looking like its going to go for $445 including flat rate shipping. has about 1hr & 15mins left.

The Chevy bell housing will not bolt up to any Rover V8 or the aluminum Buick/Olds 215's, so don't waste your money. It will bolt up to either a 4 speed 215 bell housing or a 3/4 speed 215, or an aftermarket bell housing that D & D sells. These are the only bell housings that will work. The Rover bell housing is only good with a Rover transmission.

Try to find a shifter from an S-10 pickup rather than use the Camero shifter which is bent as a result of the tranny mounting at an angle in the Camero & firebird.

All this is not to say somone can't make an adapter...

I could help, but you have only said its a T5,
not an S10, Camaro, Jeep, Mustang- V6, V8 or any other useful information. Give more information and help can be found...

As far as a generic answer, a cable drive can still be installed in some of the Camaro boxes with hardly any work.

Also, might help to know what its going behind so you are not surprised with other issues people know about on this board.

Sorry guys... i'm doing a 302 V8. based on info from Bob above pretty much decided to go with the 94/95 mustang T5 but am definitely interested in any additional information.

I don't have much info on the Ford T5, but the GM T5 up to 1995 could have the VSS replaced with the older style cable components. Ford tail shaft is different, so I do not know without seeing pics or the whole unit.

Anyways, I know of an item that converts the VSS signal to a motor that drives a cable and then your speedometer. It costs about $400, so a bit expensive compared to other items such as converting your entire speedometer to take the VSS signal or anything else but if you can think of it, there is a way to do it.
