MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Timing Chain

I am replacing the timing chain cover gasket on my 69 Rover 3.5.
This conversion is in it’s 4th year and I noticed the timing chain itself seems to be sort of sloppy. How tight should the chain be. On the slack side, I can move it about ½”.

Thanks

They are inexpensive and unless you can not get one quickly - best to replace.

It should be 'tight'. Mine didn't seem that loose (much less than 1/2" side to side play) but I replaced it and the gears anyway, and I was surprised how tight the new one was to get on, the two cogs had to be kept pretty-well exactly in line or it would jam. The old one came off much easier. When all was done I noticed when dynamic timing it was rock-steady, before it had tended to waver slightly.

I don’t remember the chain be really tight when it was originally installed. Is there a difference between the Buick 215 and Rover 3.5 Timing chain and gears?
I beleive I used a Buick timing chain and gear, maybe that is why it is loose??

The buick olds rover timming ch. assem. are all the same & you get a lot of sloop in them in no time at sll. The roller t.c. holds up real good to the o.e. junk ch.

Thanks all for the information.
I am going to replace the timing chain with an Edelbrock chain #7828. Which they say is a True-Rolling Timing Chain.
