MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Up and over or down and under

Which way has everyone gone on the exhaust routing past the rear axle? Seems like routing over the axle would give better ground clearance but it appears that most of the photos I see have the exhaust pipes under the axle. I am going to center the gas tank and run 2 pipes out the rear end (I don't want side exhausts) and would like to maximize my ground clearance. Can't you hang the pipes up higher? I'd appreciate anyone's suggestions or information.
Erich Hovley

Factory ran it under.
Paul Hunt

Under is easier, but you might find that the rear axle rests on the exhaust pipes when the car is jacked for a tire change. If you go over make sure you leave clearance for the fuel lines and pump to prevent heating the fuel and causing a vapor lock condition.
Bill Young

I run mine under. I used to have a single box either side before the axle but I kept whacking them on road humps etc. Now they're alongside a deeper/narrower fuel tank. Not ideal but then it never is. The whole set up has proved to be a pain in the rear, however at a recent track meeting of various exotica it was voted the best sounding car. Despite the probs I will never junk those glorious twin pipes.

David,

Deeper and narrower fuel tank? What are the details of that. Sounds intriguing.
Michael Willis

Had it made up in stainless. About an inch deeper, slightly longer and an inch or so narrower. Gave me sufficient clearance from the silencers without sacrificing volume. Was a real b*****d to fit though.
David

A thought that I had along these lines has to do with relocating the battery to the trunk, closing the battery box opening(s), cutting out the battery framing, and then using the void under that shelf area to place silencers. Does this sound feasible to anyone, or, has anyone attempted this?
