MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - V8 Conversion Suppliers in Australia

Greetings all,

My 1800cc Engine recently snapped a piston in half. Having always wanted to do a V8 Conversion I thought this would be as good a time as any. I have read a lot of information however I'm having trouble locating suppliers of V8 conversion parts ie chrome bumber steering rack conversion and 3.07 diff etc. Any information anyone has about conversion parts suppliers in Sydeny Australia region would be appreiated.

Dunno about suppliers in Aus, but don't get too hooked up on the 3.07 axle - an MGC axle at 3.3 gives better acceleration and is geared to 140 max.
Chris

Thanks for the tip Chris will keep it in mind when I get to buy my diff. Question 3.3 diff and Rover SD1 gearbox would give what sort RPM at 70 mph in top? I plan to use the car for long trips in Australia.

Clem, British auto Parts in Punchbowl wreck Rovers & MGs. Your chances of getting a 3.07 or 3.3 axle are zilch. You'll have to get one made up. Check the Yellow pages for Diff. engineers. I'm not 100% sure , but I believe a Valiant diff will mate with MG axles.
You've picked the worst place in the world {Sydney, NSW.) to do a conversion. You'll need an "approved" engineers' certificate amongst other red tape to register the car,& not many Engineers are willing to certify this conversion these days. The Road Traff. Auth. are discouraging them not to. So first find your friendly Engineer. Also if you check out "Australian Classic Car" mag. Theres a few parts dealers advertise there. If you get REALLY stuck, you can ring me on 9525 7031. Good luck Barrie E

Clem, my 3.3 diff and Rover 5 spd with 15" wheels gives me about 3000 RPM at 70 MPH.

Clem, Barrie's comments on NSW transport Authority's views are interesting. Here in Qld I have verbal advice fro Qld transport(supported by their brochures on engine swaps) that Qld transport don't even want to see the car IF the engine was an option for the model!! By the way have you considered the Toyota Supra gearbox?? Once again I believe Barrie has this box and 3.9 diff in his car with good results (am I correct Barrie??). Dellows here in Australia make a bellhousing conversion for this box..I would guess that the reason UK drivers use Rover boxes is simply that that box is most common over there and cheap..not really the case here in Australia whereas the Supra is readily available and cheap!. By the way there are at least 3 guys up here in S/E QLD who specialise in V8 conversions.

Hi Guys
I wouldnt even bother with the Rover 5speed, such a dog of a g/box... Go for the Supra 5 speed and bellhousing kit from Dellow..The Supra box does not require the g/box tunnel to be enlargened..It only requires a new g/box crossmember..

And as for "conversion specialists" try MG Workshops in East Bentleigh,Victoria....in reality they are
(like what happened to me) drive in with 4 cylinder MG
6 weeks later u have a fully converted V8 with all the right mods and trimmings...

And i drove mine from adelaide to them

Thanks Gents for all your advice sorry I was not on the net yesterday as I was to busy refabricating my bulkhead (drvier's side) ready for the V8.
As for registering the beast when she (sorry feminists out there but all good cars are female, loads of fun and just a little dangerous)is finsihed I'll think I go to SA where my parents live as they have lenient rules and cheap rego. Next choice engine any thoughts guys?

Steve (re conversion specialist doing all the work),
I would like to do it myself and the car does not have an engine (after the piss-and-broke) so I can't get it there. However, I'm curious (if it is not rude to ask) how much are we talking here.

P.S. can you post pictures on this site?
