MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - V8 gearbox / axle flanges available?

Hi all,

Seeing as all the torque I have eats up propshaft bearings, I bought myself a V8 propshaft only to find that the flanges are a different size. I've spoken to GKN and conversion flanges are available, but quite expensive and may require the shaft to be shortened.

Does anyone know if V8 style gearbox and axle flanges are available, and if they fit straight onto the 4-cylinder gearbox and axle? Do any other cars use identical flanges to the V8 so I can look for second-hand ones?

Thanks in advance,

MGOC and Brown&Gammons seem to have the axle flange (BTB855), pricey at around 70 of your quids though! As to whether it fits the pinion shaft or not I can't say for sure, but there are a number of different pinion shafts for the various ratios, it would be perverse if the V8 one was a different splined fitting to all the others. One slightly concerning thing which could mean the V8 pinion differs other than simply in ratio, is that the pinion oil seal for the V8 is different to the 4-cylinder cars. Clive Wheatley or other V8 conversion specialists may be able so advise.

The V8 gearbox flange is 22B619 (£40), which has special captive bolts (22B483, £4ea). The output shaft aka annulus seems to be the same on 4-cylinder and V8, so that should be a straight swap.

Paul, thank you for the info - you're a star!

Those are a bit on the pricey side, conversion flanges for the propshaft are about £30 each.

I think I'll change the flange on the gearbox and use a conversion flange on the axle end for now, and maybe change the axle flange if/when I convert the car to bolt-on wheels.

Cheers!

The V8 flanges can be redrilled to bolt up to the MG flanges. It's not a DIY job ! It has to done by a machinist. I used a Rover propshaft & had the rear flange drilled to mate up with with the MG diff. Barrie E

The MGC flange is larger and mates up to the Rover flanges giving you a much larger U-joint. Of course you will need to keep the shaft dia as close to original for clearance in the tunnel.

Land Rover propshafts use the same flanges as the V8 & the shafts are thinner than Rover sedan ones.Range Rover shafts may be similar. Barrie E

i have several axle flanges if any one is intrested
