MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Valve Guides

Anyone have any experience of K Line spiral bronze valve guide liners. I am rebuilding a pair of Buick 300 heads and thought this might be an efficient way of restoring the guides to correct tolerance and a bit kinder to 43 year old heads.

Is that you over on the V8 forum castleMGBV8?
Im seriously thinking about the Real Steel heads for my 4.6GT. How would they compare to the Buick 300's
What spec is your MG?

Hi Mark,

Yes that me on V8.org I find the site very helpful for tech info, there are some quite knowledgeable people who regularly contribute.

I'm currently putting together a budget 4.35 bottom end to go with the Buick 300 heads.

I've just bought a 77mm crank from John Eales and got a 3,9 bottom end off e-bay for £56.00! from a reliable supplier, so just need the Chevy 305 94.89mm. flat top pistons to suit the Buick 54cc chamber heads to yield a compression ratio of approx 10/1 and with a set of heavy duty 5.85" rods will bring the pistons to the top of the bores.

I will clean up the heads and increase the exhaust valve to 1.4" to improve the flow on that side but leave the inlets at 1.66" as this is principly going to be a road engine and with a fairly mild cam should produce 260+ BHP, ie, one BHP per cubic inch which is a rough guide to what an old tech fast road engine will produce.

The Buick 300 heads in full race spec 1.775 Inlet 1.5 Exhaust valves are said to be good for up to 400BHP on a 5.00 engine but I have no proof of this.

I only paid £250.00 for my good condition heads so with the upgrades will come out at approx £500-600.

The only information I have about the Merlins is the data on Real Steels site where they claim 336BHP on a 4.8 engine with a mildish cam so prob a bit more to come with wilder cam.

Hope that a help,

Kevin

Thanks Carl,

That was my post about the liners, I thought I'd ask on your side of the Atlantic as it is an American product.

Regards,

Kevin.

Yeah, I knew it was you. I had remembered that Dale used them & had posted some info, but I wasn't sure where. I have been very busy lately, so I didn't get to look for it until today.

Great valve guide article by Dale Spooner:
