MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Water Wetter

If softening agents actually aided in cooling the engine, the temperature of the coolant as it exited the engine would have to be higher because it would have absorbed more heat.

Water Wetter claim that the product improves the specific heat capacity - the amount of energy required to raise the temperature.

Any thoughts on these opposing statements and has anyone found a reduction in temperature by using Water Wetter.

If you heat a pan of water, gas bubbles appear all over the bottom/sides of the pan and act as insulation between the water and the sides of the pan. This apparently occurs within the engine/radiator. Water wetter claims to reduce this build-up and therefore increase surface area contact. The net effect being that a litre of water with bubbles absorbs less heat than a litre of water.

Due to a higher rate of heat absorption the water should be hotter, but once in the radiator it has a higher rate of heat disappation. Because the engine is still only producing the same amount of heat energy as before, the net effect is a lower running temp.

This may all be right or wrong, but in practice I find it makes a noticeable difference. Admittedly this is only at the higher, traffic jam, end of the scale.

Can anyone advise how much Water Wetter costs, and where it can be obtained in the UK?

Thanks

From MG Owners about £10 not cheap if you flush on regular basis.

David - I think from first quote the water does not exit any hotter and therefore product does not work, wheras Water Wetter are claiming with no temp rise the water can absorb more heat. Science for you!

Plenty of info on the Redline website. As I said, it works for me though if you're having to consider using it, maybe you need to look at reasons why that's the case. You may get a similar effect by dropping your antifreeze ratio. I use Hondas, already mixed 50/50, and scale it down with distilled water to a 20% concentration. Generally I would suggest sorting the 'hardware' before the 'software'.

David,

I'm looking at all aspects but WW may be a good product even without cooling problems. You are certainly right about the mix.

Paul,
I used it on my V8, just added it to the radiator, and noticed that the gauge read noticeably lower at normal running speeds.

Ive never had serious overheating problems, but the temp gauge did seem to come back to normal qwuicker with it added.
