MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - What about a good ol' Ford 9-inch rear?

What about a Ford 9" rear end? I just called Currie and they said that was by far, far, far the most standard axle on the planet. They even said I could UPS them an old junker MGB axle and they'd take the measurements right off it and make me up something that would just bolt right on!! Plus you can get disc brakes!!!!

So. Is a 9" just too heavy? (... though they did say a 9" is lighter than an 8.8".)

Terrance, I have a 9" posi in my 79BV8. I think it is a bit of an overkill but works great and there are lots of different ratios available. I have a 3.25 and like it. I didn't have to modify anything underneath, not even the battery box. I have Towerey trac bars and a Ron Hopkinson rear sway bar. Car is lowered over an inch.

I was just going to mention in the other thread about talking to Currie to get a ready to run rear end. Good to hear someon has done that ans it worked out well.

They are spendy but Currie makes *aluminum* housings for 9" Ford rear ends! They've gotta be a heck of a lot lighter than the regular steel type. I wonder if this wouldn't save considerably on your unsprung weight. By chance, does anybody know the weight of a stock MGC Salisbury rear end?

I do think a 9" is overkill,especially with a Rover. I have an 8" in my '77 with 325hp and have never had any problems.You might even have battery box interference with a 9" and definitely will have to modify the rear sway bar location.Gear ratios are not hard to find for the 8".

The 9 certainly won't break, and you wouldn't have to do anything special to it aside from narrowing. Lighter than the 8.8? If the 8.8 is only 4 lbs more than the stock MGB axle I'd sure like to know how much lighter than the 8.8 it is.

I had Currie make me up a 9 inch rear, they should still have all my specs and measurements. It has a 3.00 :1 ratio is posi and has the explorer rear disk setup with emergency brake and 31 spline axles to the MGB 4 bolt pattern . I believe it cost me about $2500 complete with shipping and it is all BRAND SPANKING NEW and under warrantee. Also the Currie 9 inch is beefier than a standard Ford 9 inch. Mine is powder coated and the center section is now availabe in aluminum.

Nothing beats new, except maybe free, but you gets what you pay for if you're lucky!

Martyn, why does your site say you are swapping to an 8.8"? (Can I have your 9"?)
I noticed today that Toyota is still using banjo axles on their Tacoma series trucks.
Wonder if a 9" with aluminum center housing, posi, and Mitsubishi rear discs would be lighter than the stock MGB axle? Hmmm...
