Cripes, Paul I didn't know you could translate Americanese, I thought it was a reference to ram-raiding and those bollards they put outside shops to prevent it.

Where are you locatoed Jimmy?

There are 2 issues with shortening a rear end. The Housing and the shafts. The housings can probably be done by most machine shops with a good machinist and welder on staff. The Shafts take a index head for the lathe which not many shops have. Then you also need to get exact before and after measurements on the housing so you know how much you took off, so you can then repeat that on the shafts, assuming that they can be shortened. I am going to try and do the housing myself with the help of a machinist friend, but we are farming out the shaft work to a shop in the area that supposedly does that type of work.

Mike,

How can you tell its US?

Oh, Honey, you bring that big rear end to me and Oprah and I will shorten it for you in just a short while!

Paul.

I rest my case ! (I'd forgotten why I stopped visiting the DS !)

I am having a rear end shortened at the moment. There are quite a few people who do it here in Oz. They are usually frequented by hot rodders and drag racers.

The important issue is really the shape of the half shafts. Often they are waisted behind the spline before thickening again further along. If you need to shorten them by less that 100mm, you could be in trouble. If the half shafts cannot be resplined due to being to thin at the right spot, you will probably have to go for billit ones.

With all the hot rodding etc that goes on in the US, I would have thought that you would have no trouble at all finding a "'shop" to get it done.

Cheers,

If you are looking to narrow a framed car, I would recommend a performance/speed shop oriented business..for those who happen to be in southern california, I would recommend Blair's Speed Shop (pasadena). They did a quality job on my Pro Street El Camino.
However if it is just the rear end work you require (unibody car), and you happen to be in the bay area (sodom and gomorrah), I would recommend a place called "The Rear End Shop" which happens to be next to "The Alignment Shop".
You will find the driveline shops more cost efficient..they are listed in the book under drivelines, I believe.

Have a look at some offset diff's of 4WD's. Some where in the archives some bright spark (from south australia) suggests using a 4WD nissan (I think)diff'. The short side is very close to the MG length so all you need do is shorten the tube on the long side and buy another 'short' axle. This can be a limited slip diff' and comes in three or four ratios. No splines or special length axles to make up and shortening one axle tube is cheap enough. Also very practical as your axles etc. are all "off the shelf" .

Paula, Michael, and Queen Latisha, for one I am glad that Michael no longer visits the US (or DS) one less asshole is always a good thing. Shops, Oprah, working on motorized vehicle parts in the living/family room may be your warped view of life in North America, not reality. So go ahead and take the Mickey/poke fun (or what ever you guys like to call picking on or making jokes at someone) at the people from the US (DS), I am sure it makes you the better person.
Jimmy

Jimmy,
I do not know how, but somehow I thought you were located in california..sorry.
As far as other insidious elements go.."where intelligence lacks..stupidity reacts"(personal quote).

So you reacted to a response that did not concern you and was not for you (read into as you wish). However you are correct that I am not in CA however thank you for your help. For me I will not take such insults from three pompous brits who believe it’s their duty to belittle people based on how they word something (on a BBS). FYI I will not be check out (reading) this message again so do not worry about your rebuttal.
Jimmy

Jimmy,

Apologies for any offence, but it is difficult to provide info on some subjects without knowing your location in World?
