MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - What starter to use???

I have just bolted in my 3.5 with SD1 trans in my 78 RB and now am trying to fing a starter that will fit this configuration. I've searched the archives for a specific starter but haven't found one. I have found comments about a Tilton starter and people suggesting the the one TSI sells. I'm in Canada and would like to order a starter locally if possible. My preference would be a gear reduction starter. Can someone provide me with a make a model number of one they have used? The performance parts dealers obviously do not list a Rover starter. I find ordering from the US with the difference in the money and the cost of freight to be a pain although I will if there is no other option.

Please help as my wife says she will not push start my car!

Leon,
I used the TSI starter with reduction and it is easy to install and works very well. You will be amazed by it. Unfortunately as you mention it comes from the US. Talk to Ted and maybe he can do something special for you. Otherwise take contact up with some Canadian V8 converters and see where they got their starters. My car is also a 77 RB.
Good luck

Whats wrong with the SD1 starter?

Mine fitted straight in.

I'll try and photograph it tonight and then post the picture somewhere and its url here.

I tried to install a SD1 starter that I bought from TSI. The starter sol is mounted on the side and interferes with the frame. I have since returned it and am waiting fora gear reduction starter from TSI. The Rover P6 starter is suppose to fit with the sol. mounted on the bottom of the starter.

Keith,
I think you might find that you tried a Range Rover starter. The SD1 starter has the solenoid located at the bottom.
I am trying to fit a Magnetti Marelli Range Rover gear reduction starter to my B. It has the solenoid on the side but the whole thing is considerbly smaller than the standard SD1 starter, so fingers crossed it will fit. Otherwise I'll have to recondition the SD1 starter.

D & D sells a gear reduction starter by McLeod, modified to fit the 215/Rover. I have one & am very satisfied. For the Rover motor, you will need a thin bushing for the block, as the locating hole on the Rover is sligjtly larger than for the Buick. D & D can supply.

TSI sells the gearstaters and must be specified whether to fit Rover or GM 215 to eliminate that problem

My starter was removed off an SD1 in my driveway and had the starter sol. at the side. My friend who also has a V8 conversion using SD1 parts as well as a Rover SD1 he drives. He had ad the similar problem and ordered the P6 starter from David vale in England for his MGB and the SD1 satrter has the sol. on the side. Is it possable north american cars use a different starter??
