MG MGB Technical - 16 gallon fuel tank

Anyone have one of these fitted to a roadster, with particular reference to ground clearance, for the tank and the exhaust when full, also how is the handling affected, Thanks A.T
Andy Tilney

Can you still get one? My pal has an alloy one fitted on his V8 but when I contacted Frontline about buying one, they had sold out and weren't planning on making any more. As for ground clearance or handling, it hasn't been an issue on his car and the extra range is very useful, especially as he does long distances on the continent. It is noticeable from behind the car as it is lower than the rear valance, but it's not unsightly. He was able to get one with a swirl pot built in - very useful if you use efi.
Mike Howlett

Mike I saw them on the Moss parts web site, it does not say NLA, but after reading further they are 16 US gallons, which is only 1.3 UK gallons more than what I already have, perhaps if I ever need to change my tank I may buy one, but for now I will keep my original one,

I was thinking of getting one for my wife's MGC, but nobody could tell me from personal experience how the fuel gauge reading would be effected. I couldn't even find out if it has baffles installed inside of it!
Stephen Strange

"how the fuel gauge reading would be effected"

Depends. If it's wider or longer but the same height and the sender is in the same position on the wall of the tank it will read as before, it will just drop slower as you use fuel at a given rate.

But if it's deeper the sender probably will read differently.

However the sender has an upper and a lower limit stop, and mine stays at F for some distance after brimming the tank, as well as stopping further movement just below the E when there is still usable fuel left. In which case a deeper tank could well stay at F longer, or stop moving when you have more fuel left than in standard tank, depending on where it is mounted. The staying at F 'feature' probably accounts for never having heard anyone in America mention that the capacity limiting device results in the fuel gauge reading lower some time after brimming the tank, compared to immediately after it was brimmed.

The gauge also has a large amount of adjustment range at either end.

60 liters is 5.8 gallons US. Where you getting your math from, mgexp? A regular advertising orgasm over there for Mosses latest Chinese adventure in rusting bad stainless steel fuel tank welds.

60 liters is 5.8 gallons US. Where you getting your maths from, mgexp?.Mr Cole,I hope you are better at working on cars, than you are at maths, with a maths answer like that I would normally write at the bottom of the page in red ink See me later, or next time copy from a more reliable sauce. A.T
Andy Tilney

It looks like S Cole has missed the 1 in front of the 5.8 making it 15.8503231 approx. lol

Well done John, good to see someone who is paying attention, and reading the question fully, I wont be writing see me later to your answer, lol. A.T

"more reliable sauce"

HP?
paulh4

Thanks for the good marks Andy, I must own up to using an app on my tablet.

"more reliable sauce" Well spotted Paul.
john wright

Well spotted indeed Paul, I think on this occasion of me trying to be clever, has definitely backfired, A.T

Are we still trying to clear out those North Korean made ("Chinese") Moss SS tanks with the bad welds? I think everybody already knows about them and is avoiding them. Maybe move on to another product to advertise for free. Maybe some of their defective internal engine parts they know are bad but keep selling?
S Cole

When I had an MGB, I got a new tank from Moss. I was surprised to discover it seemed to have a capacity 6 litres less than the original tank.
Geoff Everitt

"it seemed to have a capacity 6 litres less than the original tank."

That has been another known problem where the filler pipe projected too far down into the tank, so prevented the last couple of inches being filled http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/tank.htm#3

Not to be confused with the North American spec tank with the capacity restricting device http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/tank.htm#2a
paulh4

Yes Paul, I think I had heard of that reason before.

Actually, I got the tank from MGOC, I'm not sure why I said it was from Moss. This was in Feb 2015.
