MG MGB Technical - 1950 head gaskets

I'm interested in which 1950 head gasket in the UK is best (and for that matter which have been not reliable) - any thoughts?
Paul Walbran

I have fitted to my 1950 multi steel shims cylinder head gasket, I bought that to cambridgemotorsport, no problems, no leak.

Yes the multi layer metal headgasket is the way to go. I bought mine from Aptfast in the US. You can order online and the service is excellent. I ordered mine on a saturday and it was here in Tassy 5 days later on the Thursday. The quality of the gasket is first class and it takes up to 85mm bore. The best thing with the metal gasket is that it bolts down rock hard and doesn't need repeated retensioning. They are under $100 us I've had one on a 2250cc MGB motor for quite a while now without any problems at all and would highly recomend both the gasket and Aptfast. part no. HG-MGB-BB
Hope this helps Gary

Hey Gary- Clearly you've stroked and overbored to get out to 2250. Did you reposition sleeves to get past 84mm, or how did you do it, please. How long has the engine been on the road and under your thumb? Custom cut cam, or ????? Measured CR, or do the CombCyls ( larger than 70 CC?) add to the volume count? What is the remainder of the receipe for that FrankenBee? That is with a "please" if you have a few minutes. Cheers, Vic

Something I forgot to say. If you are going to use the metal headgasket use only a metal based sealant on it. I've got this theory going that non metal sealants insulate the gasket from the head and block and cause the gasket to get too hot and fail. A good one to use is made by VHT and is called TorqueTite copper gasket cement. It's in a pressure pack and works quite well.

If I'll send an email with details .Would that be OK with you Gary

Gary,
What brand name was on the head gasket box?
John Barber

John
It was about 18 months ago. It came in a plastic bag taped between two thick pieces of cardboard and fitted diagonally in a cardboard box' packaged to keep it safe which I thought was pretty good seeing how far it had to travel. Can't remember seeing a brandname on the gasket but the surprise bit for me was it had made in England stamped into it. I just checked and they are still on the aptfast website at the same price. There's a picture of it there too, it really is a good gasket. If you were to email them I'm sure they would tell you what brand it is ,I found them very helpfull. Gary
