MG MGB Technical - 1978 Battery?

I have searched the archives and cant find what I am looking for. I need a 12v battery for a 78 BGT its my dads car that I am getting it for so have no idea what size to get apart from 12 v ? I know it needs to fit in the box under the rear seat but dont have the measurements? Can anyone tell me what battery to get and the measurements of the space for it to fit?

In the U.S it takes a group 26 battery. You should be able to cross reference this at any parts store that carries automotive batteries. RAY

Actually, the 78 version came with a single 12V battery which was a group 24 battery in the US size. The group 26 battery is a smaller battery used when converting the older MGs from twin 6V batteries to a single 12V battery. You should be able to do a websearch and find a US company listing battery sizes along with their dimensions. The original battery was either a Lucas CP11 or the heavier duty Lucas CP13/11. You may be able to find a cross reference to the Lucas specification at a good parts store.

Unfortunately, US and UK battery designations are different.

The US group 26 is a type 063 in the UK.

Purely academic, as I don't know what the type number of the later 12v battery.

This site has a vehicle finder. If you put in the car ddetails, it lists the batteries which will fit, including dimensions.

Make sure you get the correct post orientation as well, both types are available, and reverse connection will destroy the alternator and damage wiring.
